So it’s no wonder that many are experimenting with it – such as Audi, Deutsche Bahn and Mercedes-Benz. This article draws lessons from the introduction of the method in the German financial technology company Hypoport SE, describes known problems and gives recommendations for a good start and sustainable practice.

With his company HolacracyOne, Brian Robertson 2000 developed this method of self-organization. It is intended to replace classic top-down management. To this end, the overall purpose of the organization is defined, broken down into its sub-elements and circles, consisting of several people, roles and responsibilities. Roles and circles receive their task from the higher-level circle, but decide autonomously how to process it. In concrete terms, this has a double advantage: First, the employee can act and decide freely, he does not have to ask a manager. And secondly, he bears more responsibility.

The method formalizes the organizational structure through the so-called Holacracy constitution, which represents a general set of rules for potentially every organization. It is unique in the colorful scene of self-organization, because it precisely defines the rules according to which an organization is aligned (circles, roles, responsibilities, domains, guidelines), what authority the employees have as role fillers and what is expected of them in day-to-day business can.
