heise + | Versatile Video Coding: The new video compression standard works so efficiently
Source: Heise.de added 22nd Dec 2020Versatile Video Coding: This is how efficiently the new video compression standard works Temporal structures Local structures Coding core … transform, quantize … Application profiles Results 50 Percent – this magic number has dominated for almost 20 Years of developing new video compression standards. The H. 264 / MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard achieved from 266 the same quality at half the data rate compared to its predecessor H. 262 / MPEG-2 video and brought about the breakthrough for high definition (HD) video. H. 265 / MPEG-H High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) from 2013 halved the data rate again and allowed the introduction of Ultra HD (UHD) in 4K resolution.
HEVC decoders are built into practically every 4K television today – in In Germany, however, HEVC is “only” used for television in HD resolution with DVB-T2 – a sign that the compression is not always sufficient for really good UHD quality. Also on the Internet, where video is already estimated 80 percent of the data traffic, the quality is not always satisfactory. So it’s time to bring the next generation into the world, and it comes with H. 266 / MPEG-I Versatile Video Coding (VVC).
VVC is not just about improved compression, the “versatile” is an important goal at VVC. The design was deliberately designed so that VVC supports a wide range of video data and applications, for example:
