Higher IF clock: DDR4-4000 new sweetspot for Ryzen 5000 CPUs

Technopat has revealed a slide that apparently comes from a briefing on the new processors, but which is probably not yet intended for the public. In the slide the connections between the different clock domains of the Ryzen 5000 – processors alias Vermeer are explained in more detail.

Once again, AMD emphasizes that it depends on more than the pure processor clock. First of all, AMD explains the MCLK as the clock of the memory. The UCLK is the clock rate of the memory controller, i.e. how often it can send and receive commands to the memory. The FCLK is the heartbeat of the Infinity Fabric. This is responsible for the communication between the CCD (s) and the IOD. We already know all of this from the previous generation.

For Ryzen processors, there are two modes in which a connection between these clock domains can be recorded. Up to a clock rate of DDR4 – 3733 the internal dividers work in a ratio of 1: 1: 1 (MCLK = UCLK = FCLK = 1. 866 MHz). In addition, different dividers come into play. AMD previously called DDR4 – 3600 or a clock rate of the Infinity Fabric of 1. 800 MHz as a sweet spot for the Ryzen processors (Matisse), which usually all processors reach. Overclocking the IF clock higher than 1. 800 MHz is not an easy task . Some are lucky and reach 1. 900 MHz, others fail at 1. 833 MHz.

For the Ryzen – 5000 – processors, AMD apparently speaks of the Possibility of even DDR4 – 4000 to work in 1: 1: 1 operation. This would mean that the clock of the Infinity Fabric is on 2. 000 MHz can be increased – if the processor allows it. DDR4 – 4000 in 1: 1: 1 should be used with the Vermeer models (Ryzen – 5000 – processors) be what DDR4 – 3800 in 1: 1: 1 for the Ryzen – 3000 – series was or is.

Accordingly Improvements in details have apparently led to the clock domains being able to work a little more stably. DDR4 – 3800 should work with the Ryzen – 5000 – Processors almost always possible, in exceptional cases also DDR4 – 4000.

Renoir already with detail improvements, but different behavior

The Renoir processors behave with regard to the clock rates already different than is the case for Matisse. Depending on whether it is a Renoir with 15 or 45 W TDP, different factors come into play. We have summarized the details.
