Although they may be something that reminds us of times past, the truth is that magnetic tapes for data storage are still widely used in servers and data centers as a backup system due to its high reliability and durability over time.

We recently echoed information that pointed out that Fujifilm was working on a Magnetic tape in LTO-8 format capable of reaching 400 TB capacity. Finally, the achievement has been much greater and the company’s collaboration with IBM has resulted in a LTO-8 tape of nothing more and nothing less than 580 TB.

The new tape of 400 TB takes a big leap from the 330 TB reached by its predecessor

Until now, the maximum capacity they had achieved for 3 years was the 330 TB. This new model is manufactured with a combination of Strontium and Ferrite to form a 4.3 micrometer thick ribbon and a length of 1, 255 kilometres. In total, it has a linear density of 702. bits per inch. And it reaches a record density of recording in the world, with 317 Gbpsi.
