If we consider together the fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hybrids , in Europe in September we can talk about overtaking the world of electrified cars on that one of diesel cars . The figure comes from the latest report by Jato Dynamics, which shows that the electric car market was mainly driven by Volkswagen and Toyota , and in particular by Volkswagen ID.3 .

For for the first time in history, electrified cars surpass diesel cars

Of course, the performance of electrified cars is due to the turbulence we are experiencing in this devastated 2020, marked by the health crisis. In particular, the government incentives provided in almost all European countries have led motorists to make the switch to electrified propulsion, with an increase in all segments of the segment, BEV, PHEV and HEV .

In the first 9 months of the year , new registrations in the continent fell by 29%, up to 8, 54 million units . As for the month of September alone (in which the health crisis had slightly loosened its grip), the market recorded a timid growth of 1.2%, reaching almost 1.3 million cars . For the first time, reports Jato Dynamics, electrified cars outperform one of the traditional types of endothermic propulsion, diesel.

At the same time, the market share of diesel recorded an all-time low, settling on 24, 8% . Only 10 years ago, diesel cars accounted for 50% of registrations , while the market share of electric vehicles was less than 1%. Of course, achieving this milestone also depends on the commitment of car manufacturers. Volkswagen, for example, has gone from the diesel-gate scandal to a big investment in electric, and now it is breaking record after record in the sales of the ID.3.

In the month of September, Volkswagen sold 40. 300 electrified cars in Europe, and is second in sales only to Toyota . Vehicles with a hybrid or mild hybrid engine represent 53% of market of electrified vehicles, with a volume growing by 124%. Toyota dominates this sector, together with its luxury brand Lexus , with a market share of 32%, but Ford, Suzuki, Fiat and BMW reported a decidedly consistent growth in the sales of their respective electrified vehicles. In addition to the numerous Toyota models, Ford Puma (the 69% of sales of this car correspond to mild-hybrid versions), Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda (whose hybrid versions contributed for 59% and 41% respectively).

L’ Europe’s best-selling all-electric car in September remains Tesla Model 3 , but the market volume of Tesla cars decreased by 5% in the month, due to the effort of Volkswagen and Renault, which saw market shares up by 352% and 211% respectively. Considering all cars, Volkswagen now sells more than Tesla in the world of electrification and is a leader in the segment of plug-in hybrids with the 22% of the market, followed by Volvo and BMW.
