The petrochemical company Ineos produces for a large amounts of hydrogen and wants to move to the Ineos Grenadier an off-road utility vehicle on the market. Hyundai has fuel cell electric car models on the market under the name IONIQ and has been marketing fuel cell drives ready for series production in cars of its brands since

Both companies want to test Hyundai’s fuel cell drive in the Ineos Grenadier, Hyundai said in a statement on Monday (23. November 2020). The off-road vehicle with the look of the last generation of the Land Rover Defender is an in-house development by Ineos and originally designed for six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from BMW.

Hydrogen is looking for customers Ineos produces annually 300. 000 tons of hydrogen. At the moment, it is mainly generated during the electrolysis of the salt solution for the production of chlorine; a large part is currently being supplied for fuel desulphurisation in refineries. A revitalization of the hydrogen economy could make it interesting for Ineos to produce more hydrogen.

Fuel cells offer a longer range than batteries from accumulators and limit the payload significantly less, especially in the case of heavier commercial vehicles such as long-distance trucks or cars like the Ineos Grenadier. Refueling with hydrogen should hardly take longer than refilling diesel fuel for the corresponding route.

Hyundai calculates with 15 Percent H2 trucks up to 2030 Hyundai has started 2020 a first batch of such trucks has been delivered to Switzerland and plans to 1600 units up 2025 to produce. Switzerland heavily subsidizes this project. Despite this rather selective funding in Europe, Hyundai plans to 2030 with up to 15 Percentage of market share for hydrogen-powered trucks in Europe.

Ineos announces its Grenadier for 2021 at. An electrically powered variant of this off-road vehicle would be a coup from the point of view of marketing.
