Intel Alder Lake Core
During the CES 2021, Intel showed for the first time a desktop PC running equipped with a Alder Lake processor . The new project will make up the family of Core desktop and notebook CPUs of 12 th generation during the second half of the year .
Alder Lake is a really cool processor because it will be the first, at least in the desktop environment, to be characterized by a hybrid architecture , i.e. formed by a mix of high-performance cores and units optimized for higher efficiency , a bit like the big.LITTLE design of many ARM chips . On the mobile side, Intel proposed something similar with Lakefield last year, but Alder Lake represents an evolution that Intel seems to believe in much more.
Alder Lake will be produced with an improved production process at 10 SuperFin nanometers , faster transistors and a further refined MIM capacitor will feature. To deepen this last aspect in particular, we suggest reading this article related to Architecture Day 2020.
As this is a totally new project, Alder Lake will require a renewed platform , probably based on the series chipsets 600 and equipped with the LGA socket 1700, of which a longevity of at least three generations is rumored. It is also reasonable to expect other news, such as support for DDR5 memory and perhaps PCI Express 5.0, but at Intel has not released more official information at this time.
