In his fourth quarter financial results conference, Bob Swan, an executive who held the title of CEO of the company during that period, commented that its first processors manufactured at 7 nanometers will arrive during the year 2023 , at which point most of its processors and other chips will be made with that technology.
To do this, they have changed the different steps that caused problems and that have meant the delay of this process to achieve a more simplified system that allows them to meet these new deadlines, In fact, a few months ago the company already announced a delay in its plans, postponing the arrival of 7 nm until the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.
Intel will manufacture products in third-party facilities, although for 2023 they hope to be able to manufacture by themselves the vast majority of their catalog
Additionally, new CEO Pat Gelsinger has confirmed that the company plans to outsource manufacturing of several of its products to external companies, although it expects that for 2023 the vast majority of its products will be manufactured in its own facilities.
It is expected that by then, TSMC; its main competitor in terms of chip manufacturing processes and currently in charge of manufacturing AMD’s processors, is already using the 3-nanometer node and AMD has 5-nanometer processors manufactured by TSMC on the market.
Even so, as we explained in this article, the marketing name of the manufacturing processes does not usually correspond to the “real” node size, in fact, the standard node of a 7nm Intel processor could be even smaller than a standard 5 nanometer TSMC processor node.
