Apple offers for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max no longer offers any of the popular leather folio cases that the group first introduced with the iPhone X in the year 2017 would have. The cases were recently at – quite juicy – prices of 30 for the iPhone XS or 150 Euro for iPhone XS Max, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max available and offered some useful functions. With a bit of tamping, the two integrated pockets could easily accommodate five or six credit cards, which is significantly more than Apple’s controversial MagSafe card cover

Flap closed, iPhone locked More important, however, was the magnetic closing function of the folios: This ensured that locked the iPhone automatically by closing the lid – even with some third-party cases. Technically, this was implemented using Hall-effect sensors. As it now turns out, Apple has the same on iPhone 11, 12 Pro, 12 mini and 12 Per Max apparently completely omitted.

First folio cases for iPhone 12 and Co. are already available from external providers, such as Nomad. However, these security functions are missing. When closing the lid, users either have to rely on the iPhone’s auto-lock function – which can be reached after a minimum of 30 seconds – or manually press the sleep / wake button to activate the lock. Otherwise the unlocked device could be stolen from the user even in the closed state – something that was impossible with Apple’s folio case.

MagSafe as a possible reason Why Apple uses the sensors on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max omits is unclear – observers estimate that this is due to the MagSafe installed for the first time. Technology might have to do with it. This gathers numerous magnets in the back of the mobile phone for connecting charging and other accessories.

This may not leave enough space. The range of official Apple cases was significantly changed with the introduction of the iPhone 12 series. The aforementioned credit card case (“Leather Wallet with MagSafe”) serves as a replacement for the Folio, although it only holds a maximum of three credit cards and can easily fall off when the cell phone is inserted into a trouser pocket.
