Jolla: Sailfish OS 3.4 – multi-user operation and updates for browser and e-mail
Source: Heise.de added 17th Oct 2020The Finnish mobile operating system manufacturer Jolla has released a new version of Sailfish OS. One of the highlights in version 3.4 (code name “Pallas-Yllästunturi”) is an updated browser engine that stabilizes and accelerates the display of websites in the browser and e-mails in the e-mail program. In addition, Jolla has added multi-user operation to the operating system, albeit still highly expandable.
Together with a number of other innovations and minor bug fixes, this results in a extensive update, with which the alternative smartphone operating system makes a big leap forward.
Updates for browser and e-mail program Jolla has the output of the browser engine Gecko used in Sailfish OS from 45 updated to the newer, albeit no longer brand new version 52, which was last used in Firefox ESR 52. 9 was used. Sailfish OS 3.4 uses the Gecko browser engine for the first time to display HTML content in the e-mail program. For this purpose, Jolla has created an interface that allows third-party applications to access Gecko instead of having to use the outdated QtWebkit engine, which is no longer supported by many websites.

Nevertheless, there are already useful areas of application, such as the clear separation of private and professional smartphones for company use. In this way, e-mail accounts can be created for work in the context of a special “work user”. If you switch to the private profile, only private e-mail accounts are integrated.
The multi-user principle also includes the separation of all configurations from native Sailfish OS apps. Every user must assign a PIN. Fingerprints can also be set up for each user; The same applies to the language settings.

Jolla has given the call screen a new design. The centrally displayed call acceptance symbol can be triggered with a horizontal swipe. Calls can be rejected by swiping vertically upwards.
A lot has happened in the apps: The document app can load large spreadsheet files faster and zoom and switch slides in presentation files more smoothly. The weather app can now also display an hourly forecast in the notification area.
Renaming files and folders in the internal file manager is now possible. With incoming Whatsapp calls, the Android support switches on the screen in the new version and shows the user a notification.
