In view of the massive decline in the imaging product markets, Koelnmesse has decided to cancel the leading trade fair in the industry until further notice. This means that 2022, unlike originally planned, there will be no Photokina. Koelnmesse Managing Director Gerald Böse explains: “Unfortunately, the general conditions in the industry currently do not offer a sustainable basis for the leading international trade fair for photo, video and imaging.”

Long before the corona pandemic, the market had to contend with declines in the double-digit range, 2020 this dynamic increased massively. Since 2014 the fair has reacted with concept adjustments, cycle and date changes. But that did not fundamentally improve the situation. On the contrary: Well-known manufacturers such as Leica, Nikon or Olympus had already canceled their participation for 2020 last year.

The integration of smartphone photography and videography as well as social media content could not have compensated for the failure of large parts of the traditional market. On the contrary. Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, explains: “The overall situation is therefore incompatible with the quality standards of Photokina as a world-renowned brand that stands for the highest quality and professionalism in the international imaging market.”

The decision was made by the trade fair together with the Photo Industry Association (PIV). He thanks for the common 70 years. Even if those responsible leave a back door open, the fair, which has taken place regularly since 180, is practically before From – at least before a very uncertain future.

That will not come unexpectedly, because the fair has had problems for a long time and has been 2018 repeatedly transferred or postponed, first to May 2019, then to May 2020. In March of this year, those responsible then announced May 2020 as the new date. So now a suspension for an indefinite period.
