Despite the period, the awards for photographic competitions continue. One of the latest in chronological order is the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2020 which ended on 22 October . The winners were the Italian Luca Locatelli (overall winner) and Gonçalo Fonseca (best newcomer).
Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2020
The two photographers were awarded in a ceremony by the LOBA committee in Wetzlar (Germany) in the iconic head office of Leica . The competition saw the initial examination by 65 experts of the candidates. The list was then reduced to 18 finalists thanks to the choices of the international jury.
Interestingly, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2020 are the fortieth edition of this award. Given the anniversary, the exhibition 40 Years of Leica Oskar Barnack Award was also conceived, which was organized at Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar. The latter will end in March 2021.
Within the evening (which will soon be made available on social channels of the German brand) there was the participation of Karin Rehn-Kaufmann (Art Director and Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International) who managed the evening in which important executives were also present.
The new Leica M 10 – P Reporter was then shown during the event. This camera will actually be available from 2021 in limited edition from 450 units globally.
The winners of the contest
Speaking of the winners, Luca Locatelli presented the Future Studies project showing some of the critical issues that impact on people’s lives. From the management of nuclear energy to landfills and the pollution and exploitation of material deposits and fields.
As regards instead Gonçalo Fonseca , the photographer focused on the events related to the lack of housing in the city of Lisbon with the New Lisbon project. Also in this case it is a topical issue and concerns the problems that impact on modern society.
