Less free space: Google's new conditions for online storage
Source: Heise.de added 12th Nov 2020Photos can no longer be saved in unlimited amounts in Google Drive for free. From June 1st 2021 the service will also include compressed recordings in the storage capacity. So far, this only applied to original recordings. Pictures up to 16 megapixels and videos in full HD resolution were considered high quality and were offset against the storage space used except. Google has automatically converted larger recordings into “high quality” if the user had not set it otherwise.
This applies to the storage capacity only content that has been saved after the cut-off date or that has been changed. Google explains in a blog post that the announcement is already coming so that users have enough time to switch over if necessary, i.e. to save images elsewhere or to pay for more space. The free storage capacity with a Google account is 15 gigabytes. It doesn’t only apply to photos, but also to all content from Gmail and Drive that is backed up after June 1st.
More Google storage space by subscription or with Pixel Additional storage space can be booked via Google One. The smallest subscription model with 100 costs gigabytes 1, 99 Euros per month. They can then also be used by up to five family members. If you pay an annual fee, it is 19, 99 Euro for 100 gigabytes. There is more space for more money.
Users of a pixel smartphone are excluded. You can still store high-quality photos without having to count on the storage capacity.
According to Google, the change will only affect a few users – at least those who only save high-quality recordings: “We estimate 80 percent of you reach the GB only in three years. ”
Google reserves the right to delete For accounts that have not had access to the storage space for two years, Google reserves the right to delete all secured content. If you exceed the capacity, you also run the risk that Google will delete it. Before that, there would of course be multiple warnings, emphasizes Google.
To prevent this from happening, there is a manager in the Google One app, which will get new functions for sorting and deleting from June. According to another blog post, this person can then pick out photos that are out of focus or too dark and suggest deleting them.
More than 4.3 million gigabytes are uploaded to Gmail, Drive and Photos every day. In order to be able to continue to offer storage space to all people, one must now follow these steps.
