From time to time, Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, stands up vindictive and offers statements loaded with controversy, bad words and various insults, releasing his anger against a specific company. From that famous “fuck you” to NVIDIA for its Linux driver support, to the most recent to Intel and its AVX instructions 512 with which, according to him, “Intel was laughing at everyone.”
Now his attacks have turned to direct against Intel, specifically accusing him of having “ killed the entire ECC memory industry with its horribly bad market segmentation “.
Intel does not support ECC on its home range CPUs, AMD yes
Linus refers to the division of professional and domestic ranges what Intel does, with Core processors and other domestic families on the one hand, and professional ranges like Xeon. In this division, Intel has eliminated certain technologies and support in the domestic range, leaving it only for the professional range and, as you may have guessed, the support for ECC memory is only given in the professional range like the Xeon.
On the other hand, AMD does support ECC in practically all its ranges, including the new Ryzen. Only models with integrated GPU that do not belong to the Pro range are left out.
ECC, or Error-Correcting Code , (error correction code), is a technology present in storage devices and some RAM memories that allows you to detect and even correct data corruption and errors.
“Lying bastards” or “children who had fallen headlong out of bed are some of the phrases that Linus dedicates to them
In Linus’s statements there is no lack of rude and aggressive expressions as usual, as when he alleges that “ Arguments against ECC were always absolute rubbish, “” RAM makers who claim that for economy and low consumption are lying bastards “
Good old Linus assures that the problems derived from not using ECC have existed for several generations, but these “bastards happily sold broken hardware to consumers”, referring to manufacturers.
He goes on to say that Some manufacturer claims that modern DRAM is so reliable that it doesn’t need ECC are nothing more than “ bedtime stories to children who had fallen out of bed on their heads too many times “, to finish with a “ I have been complaining about this for decades, I do not want to say that” I was right “, I want this to be fixed and I want ECC, AMD did it, Intel didn’t. “
In this way, the creator of Linux takes much of the blame for practically nonexistent market for ECC memory for home environments to Intel’s practices of not offering support on its non-professional processors.
