Microsoft officially announced AutoSR earlier this month, its new technology to bring Super Resolution upscalers to more games. For now, AutoSR is only going to be available for Snapdragon X based laptops, coming in June. The first wave of 12 titles to support AutoSR have also just been announced.
AutoSR is a Windows-level Super Resolution technology, similar to AMD’s FSR, Intel’s XeSS or Nvidia’s DLSS. For certain titles, AutoSR will be a feature enabled by default, and with the rollout kicking off with Snapdragon X powered laptops, we would expect that Microsoft is hoping that by enabling this feature by default, casual gamers will be able to jump right into titles with playable settings, rather than forcing them to tinker in the menus.
The first twelve games to support AutoSR are all slightly older titles, like Resident Evil 2 & 3 (Remakes), Borderlands 3, Control, Dark Souls 3, God of War, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, BeamNG drive and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
To use AutoSR, you will need a ‘Copilot+ PC’, Microsoft’s new name for the upcoming wave of AI-focused laptops. More specifically, you’ll need one with a Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus processor under the hood. The first laptops with these processors are expected to begin shipping in mid-June, so it will be a while before AutoSR can be properly tested.
Right now, Microsoft has not announced plans for a wider rollout of AutoSR, but we would expect that eventually, it will be made available to all Windows 11 users.
KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see how well Snapdragon X laptops run games like Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remake, especially compared to Apple’s M-series powered Macs, which recently received ports for a few titles, including Resident Evil 4 Remake and Death Stranding.
