Geekbench’s online database has several results from an HP Omen notebook that comes with Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 3070 (Mobile), paired with Intel’s eight-core processor Core i7 – 10870 H. Geekbench has 40 shader multiprocessors (5120 Shader cores) at a clock frequency of about 1300 MHz and 8 GByte graphics memory read out.

This would be the mobile version of the GeForce RTX 3070 significantly slower than the desktop version with 5888 shader cores and 1730 MHz Boost. Lower clock frequencies are common in notebooks in order to reduce power consumption and thus increase efficiency. Nvidia, on the other hand, has not cut the graphics chips any more for years: The mobile GeForce RTX 2070 used the desktop as well -GPU 2304 Shader cores, the mobile GTX 1070 even had more shader cores than its desktop sister.

Too high Power consumption The reason could be the power consumption: The desktop series GeForce RTX 3000 alias Ampere is thirstier than the previous generation, so the GeForce RTX 3070 with 220 Watts consumes roughly as much power as the GeForce RTX 2080. Even thick gaming notebooks give the GPUs far less than 200 watts because of the space and limit cooling – mobile versions of the GeForce RTX 2070 usually come to a little more than 100 Watt.

In addition, Nvidia still has space on top for the mobile GeForce RTX 3080. The well-informed website Notebookcheck assumes that Nvidia will also use the GeForce RTX 3080 (Mobile) on the graphics chip GA 104 instead of the larger GA 102 the desktop RTX 3080 is set. Thus the notebook GPU would have a maximum of 6144 shader cores and 8 GB of RAM. For comparison: the desktop version comes with 8704 shader cores paired with 10 GByte memory on 320 instead of 220 data lines.
