Netflix has a jam-packed summer movie slate this year
Source: The Verge added 27th Apr 2021Netflix released its summer movie lineup on Tuesday, and it’s looking like the streaming service will be jam-packed with new movies in the coming months. The sheer volume should help Netflix compete with Disney, which is gearing up for the July 9th premiere of Black Widow on Disney Plus and in theaters, and WarnerMedia, which is releasing each of its 2021 theatrical titles (such as the new Space Jam) day and date on HBO Max.
Netflix sent me a preview of what’s coming ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, and honestly, there were an overwhelming amount of titles to sift through. It seems like there will be a lot to watch! I’ve picked out just a few that caught my eye and compiled them in this post, but if you want to see the full slate, check out Netflix’s blog or watch this sizzle reel.
Happy summer streaming.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines
The Mitchells vs. The Machines is an animated film about a family (The Mitchells) that has to save the world from a robot uprising while on a road trip. It’s produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who you might recognize as the producers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse and the writers, directors, and producers of The Lego Movie. The Mitchells vs. The Machines hit theaters on Friday, April 23rd, but it’ll be on Netflix this Friday, April 30th.
Army of the Dead
Army of the Dead is a new zombie movie directed by Zack Snyder starring Dave Bautista, who you may recognize as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. It’s out on May 21st.
The Ice Road
Liam Neeson stars as an ice road trucker who has to lead a rescue mission across a frozen ocean to save miners trapped in a diamond mine in Canada. This sounds… awesome? Seems like the wintry movie will make for a fantastic summer flick. It will be released on June 25th.
America: The Motion Picture
I’m just going to share Netflix’s official description of this ridiculous-looking animated film here: “A chainsaw-wielding George Washington teams with beer-loving bro Sam Adams to take down the Brits in a tongue-in-cheek riff on the American Revolution.” Oh, and George Washington is voiced by Channing Tatum. It’s out on June 30th.
