Netflix increases the prices for the use of its streaming service in Germany. The standard and premium tariffs are affected by the increase. The basic tariff should still cost 7, 99 Euro per month.

Netflix raises the price of the standard tariff, which enables streaming of videos in HD quality and use on two devices at the same time, from 11, 99 Euro to now 12, 99 euros per month. The premium tariff will cost two euros more in future. The price for this is 17, 99 Euro instead of 15,99 Euro. In the premium tariff, users can watch videos in Ultra HD quality with HDR and Dolby Atmos. The price of the basic tariff remains unchanged and is still 7 99 euros for the monthly subscription. However, the quality of the video stream is limited to SD. In addition, streaming is only possible on one device, so this tariff is not suitable for parallel use in families.

The new tariffs are effective immediately for new subscribers. Existing customers are not yet affected. For them, the price increase should take place in the next few months. Existing customers will receive 30 days before the price increase of their subscription takes effect, according to Netflix.

Price increase due to rising costs Netflix justifies the price increase with increasing costs for the production of its own films and series. In the German-speaking area, investments have been “massively” increased in order to produce more German-language content. They want to keep that 2021.

The last price increase in Germany was two years ago. Before that, Netflix had already raised the subscription prices 2017 and 2015. The fact that Netflix leaves the basic tariff untouched seems to be due to the fact that the streaming service can advertise with a low entry price in comparison with competitors. With Amazon Prime Video, the starting price for a monthly subscription is also 7, 30 Euro, with Disney + currently still at 6, 99 Euro. However, Disney + increases the starting price from 23. February by two euros to 8, 99 euros.
