NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 SUPER will continue to use Samsung's 8nm lithography – no transition to 7nm TSMC
Source: Pure PC added 20th Dec 2020Since the debut of GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 a few weeks have passed, although there is no question of a successful premiere – from the very beginning, the new Ampere systems are very poorly available or even impossible available (such as Founders Edition variants). In the case of the weaker GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, the situation looks a bit better, but here we are also waiting for prices to stabilize. One of the reasons for the problems with RTX cards 3000 was supposed to be the insufficient yield from 8 nm lithography, for which Samsung is responsible. A few months ago, information appeared according to which, with possible RTX cards 3000 SUPER, NVIDIA would already use TSMC production tapes. According to the latest reports, next year’s SUPER editions will still be based on the same Samsung process.
According to the latest reports, next year’s NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards 3000 SUPER will continue to use Samsung’s 8nm lithography.
According to a report published by The Korea Economic Daily, NVIDIA does not intend to use TSMC’s 7nm lithography to produce refreshed Ampere chips, also known as GeForce RTX, anytime soon 3000 COOL. Instead, the source reports that a new agreement has been signed between NVIDIA on Samsung, under which the Korean giant will continue to be responsible for the production of chips in 8 nm lithography. Let us remind you that on January 12 in January, NVIDIA will present new systems based on the Ampere architecture – primarily GeForce RTX mobile cards 3000, but also the desktop GeForce RTX 3060 in two variants. Perhaps there will also be RTX 3050, although there are no confirmatory reports here yet.
At the end of 2021 of the next year a refreshed line of Ampere cards with the note SUPER is to appear. These chips are again to use the 8nm technological process from Samsung. The transition to TSMC’s production lines will take place only with the next generation – the Hopper, which is to debut sometime in the second half 2022 and use 5nm lithography. Please note, however, that this is unofficial information. NVIDIA and Samsung have not publicly confirmed the extension of the cooperation for at least the next 1.5 years.
