Next week, NVIDIA will present a new generation of graphics cards for laptops in the form of GeForce RTX chips 3060, GeForce RTX 3070 and GeForce RTX 3080. A few days before the manufacturer’s conference, more and more information about the specifications of individual cards is appearing on the web. We already know that at least GeForce RTX 3070 and (especially) RTX 3080 will not be based on exactly the same chip versions in the desktop. This will be especially noticeable in the case of the top RTX 3080, which will use a full GA core in laptops 104 instead of a larger and noticeably stronger GA 102. The GPU-Z program, in turn, has a detailed specification of the energy-saving variant in the form of GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q Design. This card has no secrets for us anymore.

A new Gigabyte laptop with NVIDIA GeForce RTX has appeared in the GPU-Z database. Max-Q Design. Thus, we got to know the full specification of the upcoming energy-saving card.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q Design appeared in the GPU-Z program, which was launched on one of the upcoming Gigabyte laptops. The card actually comes with a full Ampere GA core 104 with 6144 CUDA cores. Contrary to desktop cards, mobile counterparts still use the PCIe 3.0 interface. The upcoming card for slim gaming laptops also has 192 texturing units (in this case, GPU-Z gives the wrong value) and 96 rendering units. In addition, there are 192 3rd generation Tensor cores and 48 2nd generation RT units.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q Design in this specific configuration has 8 GB VRAM, but we know that there will also be variants with 16 GB. Adding to this various TDP factors, it turns out that the fragmentation of the gaming laptop market will be even greater than with the Turing generation and even more misleading for the less oriented customer. The Ampere GA chip 104 also uses GDDR6 memory with effective clock speed 12 000 MHz (384 GB / s of bandwidth) – that’s about 1000 MHz more compared to GDDR6 memory used in RTX cards 2070 SUPER Max-Q and RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q. Normal variants will have dice 14 000 MHz. As for the core clock, the base clock is 780 MHz, in the GPU Boost mode it increases to 1245 MHz. Again, the Max-Q variants will be very much cut in this respect compared to not only desktop cards but also full-voltage mobile variants. However, the card TDP should not exceed 80 W.
