The RTX 3000 – introduction: Ampere in fashion
Nvidia has the RTX 3080, but for many it will stop there; the cards are only rarely in stock at sellers. Here you can read about the current state of affairs.
Immediately after making the RTX available 3080, all of Nvidia’s Founders Editions were bought up, apparently in large part by bots. The site crashed as a result, and since then Nvidia has been manually checking sales through its site and the Founders Editions are also being sold through a number of retailers, such as Best Buy in the United States.
In front of the RTX 3090 is more or less the same, despite the considerably higher asking price of this card. This will in part have to do with the fact that this card is a lot better at mining the popular cryptocurrency Ethereum, compared to the RTX 3080. It is possible that this will also apply to other digital currencies, at least the cards seem to be popular with miners. The same seems to be the case with AMD’s RX 5000 video cards.
Also, both Ampere boards appear to have custom variants that experience different problems, which would in part be due to a flaw in the power supply design. Extensive use appears to have been made of sp-caps, a type of capacitor. The more expensive mlccs would be better recommended for the RTX 3000 cards in particular, but not all cards use of this type of part. Most manufacturers have now officially declared what the problem means for their cards.
Unfortunately, the chip designer expects the shortages for both the 3080 if the 3090 will hold until beginning 2021, until after the holidays. This can also be seen in the stocks and deliveries of certain online retailers.
