Daimler showed the cockpit of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan. It consists of over 21 centimeters of glass, under which three screens shine: one as a speedometer unit, one as a central screen, one for the passenger. The total area of the screens adds up to 2432 cm². There is also a large head-up display and a 3D effect that can be switched off on the speedometer unit, as is the case with the S-Class. Under the elaborately curved aluminum silicate glass, Mercedes 12 installed unbalance units, the trigger the virtual vibration click known from other devices. Coatings reduce reflections and should make cleaning easier, which is already made easier by the large, continuous surface.

To This integration comes with an improved user interface with the MBUX: Everything should take place on one menu level if possible (“zero layer”). To ensure that this works clearly, the engineers rely on context. Habits linked to user profiles steer a constantly refining, adaptive behavior. So if a user regularly uses the hot stones massage in cold weather, the system automatically suggests it to him in cold weather. Rules based on GPS position (as we know them from BMW, for example) are also possible, for example an automatic suspension lift on the speed bump just before the garage. The suggestions appear as small “Magic Buttons” on the large center console.

(Image: Daimler) The screens in the middle and for the passenger are OLED screens, which ensures perfect black values and corresponding contrast values. The speedometer screen is a special TFT screen due to the 3D effect. The front passenger screen only works when the front passenger seat is occupied; when unoccupied, it shows decorative Mercedes asterisks. The stereo camera of the driver monitoring also ensures that the driver is not distracted even when the passenger seat is occupied. The system can pause video playback when looking there.

Even more powerful hardware Voice control remains a central element of the new MBUX. There is currently no better system in a car, mainly due to the superior offline performance of the Mercedes system. Together with gestures, habits and context, the aim is to reduce the distraction of the screens, even though they appear dominant at first glance. In order to allow all of this to be fluid and future-proof, Mercedes has further upgraded the already unrivaled hardware: The 8-core SoC from NVidia now includes 24 GByte RAM (in the S-Class there are 16 GByte).

The hyperscreen should initially only be offered in the EQS. The Mercedes-Benz EQA does not receive it because it is too expensive for the segment. The S-Class also sticks to its recently introduced 5-umbrella MBUX. The hyperscreen is not included in the standard equipment of the EQS, but in the list of options. Daimler has not yet given a price, but it will definitely be juicy.
