Pandemic delays DisplayPort 2.0

The products with DisplayPort 2.0 originally planned for the end of last year are delayed. Monitors are being developed, but could not be widely tested as usual due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first DisplayPort 2.0-compliant products should come on the market this year.

Die Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has already specified the DisplayPort 2.0 standard in the middle 2019. At that time, VESA expected the corresponding products to be launched at the end of 2019. But even the latest graphics cards of the series Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 or AMD Radeon RX 6000 only support DisplayPort 1.4a.

DisplayPort 2.0 works in principle DisplayPort 2.0 offers more bandwidth and allows higher resolutions of up to 16 K (15360 × 8460) at 60 Hz.Alternatively, thanks to the high bandwidth, several high-resolution displays can be connected in series via a cable, e.g. two 8K screens with 120 Hz or three 4K monitors with 90 Hz.

“monitors with support for DisplayPort 2.0 are located currently under development, “a VESA spokesperson told The Verge . DisplayPort 2.0 is said to be functional in new system chips that 2020 will be found in products.

Cross-company tests are missing The delay in DisplayPort 2.0 is due to the coronavirus pandemic. Hardware developers and engineers usually meet several times a year at so-called PlugTest events. Various companies test their systems and their interoperability.

The VESA 2020 did not organize any plug tests. The development of DisplayPort 2.0 compliant products has therefore been delayed. VESA is now planning the next PlugTest in Taiwan in spring. This should start the process again.

VESA expects 2021 also the first devices that are equipped with the “DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 “can handle. This is part of USB 4 and can control high-resolution monitors via a USB-C cable. First, AMD, Intel and Nvidia have to introduce graphics cards or chips that support DisplayPort 2.0.
