Introduction

Dating back to 1985, Patriot started in the United States San Francisco Bay Area and has since expanded with distribution channels around the world to offer consumers access to a wide range of different products. While the headquarters may still be located in the USA, not all of the company’s products are assembled in the country with facilities in Fremont, California, Taipei, and Taiwan. Given Patriot’s long history with system memory, it is no surprise that the company would eventually enter the DDR5 market with its Patriot Viper memory line aimed at the enthusiast crowd under the Viper Gaming branding umbrella.

DDR5 memory is still in the early adoption phase with Intel’s 12th Gen Core processors and accompanying LGA 1700 socket being the only supporters of this technology. In related tech news, AMD announced the company’s next-generation Ryzen CPUs and AM5 socket during Computex 2022. Due out in Q3 2022, AMD will also bring with it DDR5 support. For now, at the time of writing, DDR5 is still exclusive to Intel, though. With that comes the question if DDR5 is worth transitioning to. For the casual user, leaving behind DDR4 isn’t always beneficial. For those who want an in-depth look into the trade-offs between the two, TechPowerUp already has an article with an in-depth comparison of DDR4 and DDR5 performance on Intel’s Alder Lake CPUs.

Patriot currently offers multiple memory products with consumer and enterprise lines to fit a wide range of consumer needs. Using the established DDR4 Viper brand, Patriot brings forward the name with a new addition appropriately named Viper Venom for its DDR5 memory. This product is available in RGB and non-RGB formats as well. Configurations include 16 GB (2x 8 GB) and 32 GB (2x 16 GB) kits with frequencies ranging from 5200 MT/s to 6200 MT/s. In this review, we will be taking a closer look at the Patriot Viper Venom RGB DDR5-6200 kit. Using modest timings of 40-40-40-76 at 1.35 V for the 6200 MT/s X.M.P profile, it brings higher bandwidth compared to the baseline JEDEC 4800 MT/s. Marketed towards gamers and PC enthusiast alike, let us now see how this Patriot Viper Venom RGB DDR5 32 GB kit stacks up against the stiff competition!
