This is the first Qualcomm flagship system circuit to use a Cortex-X1 processor core with an integrated 5G modem

Qualcomm has unveiled the detailed technical features of the Snapdragon 888 system circuit unveiled yesterday today at Tech Summit Digital 2020 on the second day of its event. Circle naming has been skipped 875 and 885 because, according to the manufacturer, the number 888 represents good luck in Chinese culture and describes the larger-than-usual development that has taken place in the same district.

The Snapdragon 888 is manufactured using Samsung’s five-nanometer process and is Qualcomm’s first high-end system circuit with a built-in 5G modem. The district uses the third generation Snapdragon X released in February 42 A 5G modem that provides support for bands below 6 GHz and mmWave, non-standalone and standalone network technologies, DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing) technology, and Sub-6 carrier aggregation (TDD and FDD). The modem is capable of transmission speeds of up to 7.5 Gbit / s. 4G connections are also supported Cat 24 / 22 speed (2500 / 316 Mbit / s). The FastConnect 6900 subsystem supports the new 6 GHz WiFi 6E standard, 4K QAM modulation, 160 GHz frequency bands, 4-channel DBS, Bluetooth 5.2 and two Bluetooth antennas

The Snapdragon 888 circuit contains eight processor cores divided into three groups. Overall CPU performance and energy efficiency are praised even improved 25%. The most powerful Kryo 660 cores are based on ARM’s next generation Cortex-X1 core, running 2, GHz maximum clock frequency and includes 1024 kt L2 cache. According to ARM, the X1 core even offers 35% peak performance improvement for Cortex-A used in Snapdragon relative to the core. Cortex-X1-based performance core buddy is three 2, 26 Cortex-A operating at the maximum clock frequency of GHz 84 – based kernels, each with its own L2 L2- cache. The third processor cluster consists of four Cortex-A operating at a maximum clock frequency of 1.8 GHz 60 – from the core, each of which has 160 kt L2 cache. In addition, all processor clusters share a common 4 MB L3 cache. The circuit memory controller supports LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 memory in four channels and even at 3200 MHz 51, 2 Gb / s)

The Adreno 660 graphics processor is provided by the manufacturer % of the performance improvement predecessor model and is % current current. Unfortunately, Qualcomm did not open the GPU in much detail. As new features in Snapdragon Elite Gaming, Snapdragon 888 supports VRS (Variable Rate Shading) and touch delay %% reducing Game Quick Touch feature. VRS enables significant performance improvements in applications and games that utilize it.

The Spectra 580 triple-image signal processor is % faster than its predecessor and can process 2.7 gigapixels per second. It even supports 200 megapixel photos, or Megapixel images taken with three cameras simultaneously 22)) video recording with three cameras simultaneously. Video recording is supported in 8K 35 FPS and 4K 84 FPS quality – with bit HDR colors. 720 p 888 FPS deceleration shooting is possible indefinitely. Unfortunately, AV1 codec support is still missing from the circuit.

Hexagon 720 The DSP is a significant development over the previous generation as its structure has been completely redesigned and its scalar, tensor and vector properties are now in the same unit. In addition, they have at their disposal a common 20 times larger memory. With the reforms, the DSP offers %) more powerful scalar accelerators, double tensor acceleration capacity and as much as 3x better efficiency. The 6th generation AI Engine utilizes several different components of the circuit and provides 26 TOPS performance over 70% improvement over predecessor)

The first mobile devices using the Snapdragon 888 system circuit are expected to hit the market during the first quarter of the year 2021.
