Egregor, a ransomware group, has apparently compromised the internal networks of both Ubisoft and Crytek, stealing data along the way. Some of the data that was stolen includes the source code for Watch Dogs: Legion, something that the group is threatening to release unless Ubisoft gets in touch.
As per ZDNet, Egregor has posted the stolen data of both companies on the ransomware group’s dark web portal this past Tuesday. Details on how Egregor accessed the data are still unknown. The group has already given a glimpse of what they have stolen, threatening to post more in the coming days if the companies don’t pay.
Regarding the Ubisoft files, the images suggest that they had access to Watch Dogs content that the group claims that belong to the upcoming Watch Dogs: Legion, set to release later this month. Apparently, Ubisoft has been warned that its employees have been targeted by phishing scams. This might explain how the hackers were able to access Ubisoft’s internal network.

On the Crytek side of things, Egregor has apparently stolen 300MB of files. Some of these files included documents that seem to belong to Crytek’s game development division. These documents mention games such as Warface, a free-to-play online first-person shooter, and Arena of Fate, a cancelled free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena, but also Crytek’s Gface social gaming network.
Ubisoft and Crytek haven’t responded to these leaks publicly at this time and apparently, neither has been in touch with the Egregor group either.
KitGuru says: Security breaches and threats like this always lead to big investigations. We’ll likely hear some official responses within the next few days as law enforcement begins to get involved.
