The 2020 closes with a surge in sales of electric cars leading to a given record of + 251, 5% compared to the previous year. The pandemic from COVID – 19 impacted every sector, causing substantial changes in habits. This also happened in the automotive sector , which faced a complicated year, with plants stopped in due to the lockdown and the consequent overall decline in sales throughout the 2020.
2020: only electric mobility is saved
However despite the difficulties the electric car market continued to grow , appropriately supported by incentives. Unlike combustion engines, the pure electric (BEV) and plug-ins (PHEV) continue to grow even surpassing pre-COVID forecasts. The figure emerges from the report that Motus-E publishes every month, an association founded in 2018 which today groups together 60 operators in the automotive world, utilities, suppliers of electricity and charging infrastructures , battery supply chain, consulting firms, rental companies, universities, environmental associations and consumer associations.
Turning to the numbers, in the 2020 I’m 59. 875 the new cars registered of which 32. 500 Bev (i.e. electric battery car) and 27. 375 Phev (plug in hybrid car). However, the dramatic reduction of more than 500. 00 0 car on the total registration , which in percentage translates into a – 27. 1% compared to 2019. Today we can count on market shares relating to the 2020 of Bev and Phev equal to 2.3% and 1, 97% , but if the market had been even to that of 2019 the shares of only Bev and of only Phev would have been of 1.6% and 1.4% ; these data tell us that we still have a long way to go and that the incentives are necessary to support a market, still partially mature, for at least another 3 years.
In detail for the month of December 2020, there was a very important growth in sales compared to the previous month: pure and plug-in electric, respectively, recorded 7. 258 and 6. 354 units sold. This translates into a increase in sales compared to November 2020 of the 52% for Bev and del 30% for Phevs .
The best-selling BEV electric cars in Italy resulted, in the order: the Renault Zoe , Smart Fortwo , Tesla Model 3 , Volkswagen e-Up and Fiat 500 AND which is succeeded in just two months from the start of sales to enter the Italian top five. In December, Fiat 500 is the best-selling electric, according to the latest UNRAE data. Except for the Tesla Model 3, the gradual enrichment of the offer portfolio is appreciated, which aligns with the preferences of Italian consumers who focus mainly on small and medium class segments (A, B and low C).
