Rumor: NVIDIA has sold GeForce RTX 3000 cards for cryptocurrencies
Source: Pure PC added 28th Nov 2020Since the debut of GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 a few weeks have passed, although there is no question of a successful premiere – from the very beginning, the new Ampere systems are very poorly available or even impossible available (such as Founders Edition variants). Until now, we thought that the main and actually the only problem was Samsung’s underdeveloped process (8 nm), but unconfirmed information leaked to the network that a certain supply of Ampere cards was sent by NVIDIA to cryptocurrency miners. In this way, ordinary gamers were not able to receive the cards they ordered, like GeForce RTX 3080 or GeForce RTX 3090.
According to analysts at RBC Capital Markets, NVIDIA has sold Ampere graphics cards worth close to to cryptocurrency companies) million dollars. This is supposed to be another reason for the poor availability of cards.
Without no doubt NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards 3000 are very efficient cards, and according to cryptocurrency tests, even several times more efficient than their predecessors from the Turing family. It is possible that some of the already modest card stock could have been sold to companies that are related to cryptocurrencies. This is indicated by the analyst Mitch Steves from RBC Capital Markets. He discusses that in the recently ended financial quarter, NVIDIA sold GeForce RTX cards 3000 for a total value of 175 million dollars. Of course, this does not mean that all GPU stock has disappeared for cryptocurrency mining, after all, the company’s revenue related to the gaming sector was much higher. However, if the information provided by said company is correct (NVIDIA has not currently confirmed or denied it) then the whole situation will look very bad from a marketing point of view. Many players have not received their cards until today, often ordered in September.
Very high interest in GeForce RTX cards 3000 on the part of cryptocurrency miners is to be related to the upcoming debut of an improved version of the Ethereum blockchain, in which new cards even have 4X faster performance than the GeForce RTX 2000 Turing family. The purchase of subsequent batches of Ampere series cards was to be done mainly by Chinese companies, where cryptocurrencies are the most popular. If this was the case, it is no wonder that we will have to wait for the better availability of Ampere.
