Odyssey for gamers Early this year Samsung unveiled the new Odyssey series of gaming monitors. The screens are characterized by a recognizable logo, a striking design and RGB lighting. The top model is the Odyssey G9 LC 50 G 95 T, A 49 “- superwide panel with 5120X1440 pixels, one 240 Hz refresh rate, a Vesa Display HDR 1000 mark and a very strong curvature of 1000 R. Tweakers watched this Odyssey G9, which has been out for a while, but also the Odyssey G7 LC 27 G 75 T, A 27 “screen that also includes a 1000 R curvature and 240 Hz refresh rate has , combined with a DisplayHDR 600 – certification.

Both screens have LCDs with VA panel technology. VA is not known for its speed, but these panels turn out to be fast, with a gtg response time of an average of 1ms for the G9 and 1.6ms for the G7. In addition, there is low variation in response time. Thanks to the Display HDR certification, the screens can display a wide color gamut with HDR images and offer a relatively high peak brightness, while also having local dimming to increase the contrast. That local dimming is limited: the G9 has ten zones, the G7 eight. If the entire screen must be white, the maximum brightness is only available for a short time, within a few seconds the brightness drops to 632 cd / m² for the Odyssey G9 and 446 cd / m² for the Odyssey G7.

In sdr, the monitors do not always provide accurate reproduction, so they are not very suitable for photo editing, for example. Also the 1000 R-curvature does not help: for desktop applications, it produces distortion, particularly with the G7. If you look at this screen diagonally from the left or right, it shows a relatively large color deviation and brightness decrease.

For gaming, the Odyssey monitors offer a special combination of features and performance anyway. The Odyssey G7 and the Odyssey G9 both therefore receive the Ultimate award. They are not cheap: the Odyssey G7 has a suggested retail price of 615 euro , the Odyssey G9 from 1500 euro.
