Just yesterday we were talking about Western Digital had partnered with Dropbox to start rating the units of 20 Company TB , something that predicted a near launch for all customers who wanted units of this type, but now it is Seagate who ensures that their units of 20 TB with HAMR technology will begin to be shipped to its customers this December.
HAMR technology uses a laser to heat the surface of the hard disk that is intended to be written, making it more unstable and allowing weaker magnets to be used to achieve the same effect. With this, it is avoided to affect the neighboring bits, allowing to increase the unit’s writing density.
According to the company, although the units of 20 TB are the largest that exists today in terms of hard drives, are quite far from the that HAMR is expected to be able to manage , with a potential capacity of 50 TB per drive expected for 2026.
In addition to its HAMR drives, Seagate also plans to release drives dual-actuator hard drive MACH.2 that allows reading and writing to different parts of the disk simultaneously , thus doubling the IOPS of the drive in MACH.2, and potentially tripling or quadrupling them in MACH.3 and MACH.4 with three and four actua ores respectively.
