Over the course of the 9th console generation, we have seen SEGA move away from its previous strategy of platform exclusives; bringing more of its back catalogue to multiple systems. According to the publisher, this change has helped bring a new wave of success to its JRPG franchises.

As part of SEGA’s annual report, the publisher revealed that the Persona series had surpassed 23.5 million players, with the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) franchise reaching 27.7 million.

As translated by GamesRadar+, SEGA has attributed this recent uptick in sales success to their changing strategy of bringing more of its JRPG titles to multiple platforms – as well as the increase in simultaneous global launches.

Both Persona and Like a Dragon were PlayStation console exclusives for the longest time, with 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon marking the first entry in that series to come to Xbox.

Similarly, RGG Studio confirmed that the recently-released Switch version of 2016’s Yakuza Kiwami has been “selling like hotcakes.”

With the inevitable Persona 6 said to be the first new entry in the series to receive a simultaneous multiplatform launch, it will be interesting to see how quickly the franchise winds up hitting the 30 million mark.
