Starlink Internet achieves up to 200 Mbps in download in new measurements
Source: Hardware Luxx added 09th Nov 2020Elon Musk plans to make Starlink a high-performance alternative for regions in which conventional network providers offer slow or no connections in the Internet. A few months ago, official measurements of download speed and ping were published, which are marked with 60 Mbps, or 20 to 90 ms represent good values for satellite-supported Internet connections. A publicly available beta version of the service was launched in parts of the United States last month. With the speeds mentioned, the Internet service in rural areas already outshone most of its competitors.
Now speed tests that were compiled on Reddit show a significant increase in speed. The measurements in November revealed an average speed of around 100 Mbps, one measurement was even 200 Mbps. In some cases, this exceeds the speed that customers in cities can expect at the moment, but due to the high density of households, usage there has to be assessed differently than in rural areas. Nevertheless, with Starlink, the established providers have to adjust to a serious competitor. Especially since the stated values have not yet been reached with the full capacity of the network. Starlink will launch many more satellites over the next few months in order to provide coverage across the board. It can therefore be assumed that the performance could increase significantly. Elon Musk himself speaks of a gigabit as the desired goal.
The satellite internet is an attractive alternative, especially for rural companies. The monthly costs are just under 100 US dollars, but a corresponding receiving device must be used for one-time 499 US dollars. Nevertheless, for many companies a fast, stable connection should be worth the cost. Even if there is availability in other parts of the world, it is still unclear when the service will be available in Europe and at what price.
