Tesla Model Y
Tesla has started producing vehicles Model Y at the plant Gigafactory of Shanghai . The news comes from YouTuber Wu Wa who regularly performs flights with drones near the huge site of production owned by Tesla in China to scrutinize the news.
Unlike Tesla’s programs with other vehicles, which normally include the export from the main factory in Fremont (California), in China the Tesla will be produced locally. For several months now, Tesla has been improving the facilities of the Shanghai Gigafactory to be able to complete the entire Model Y production process at this plant. In fact, in the last 9 months, the plant has doubled in size.
Tesla prepares the debut of Model Y in China
Tesla’s decisions on the marketing and sale of its vehicles in China, on the other hand, depend on the agreements with local government authorities. In fact, no Western manufacturer can sell products manufactured outside the country to China. Last month Tesla received approval to start production of Model Y from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Chinese.
“This week I noticed at least 40 Model Y wrapped in protective covers in the parking lot inside the Shanghai plant. Four more cars reached the group and the workers hurried to put on the covers “ wrote Wu Wa.
In the past Tesla had made it known that the production of the Model Y in China would start at the beginning of 2021, but in the automotive environment there has been rumor of an advance compared to the scheduled times, so as to be able to put the first electric SUVs on Chinese roads of the brand already in the first three months of the year. The first Model Y vehicles produced at the Shanghai Gigafactory are expected to be delivered to local Tesla employees.
In China, Tesla has seen very high interest in the Model Y and expects to sell some many examples, also in consideration of the success that the compact crossover segment is enjoying in the area. Tesla is thought to be able to sell in China 30 mila Model Y units per month (one third of Model 3 volume sold in a month).
Xpeng is one of Tesla’s fiercest rivals in China.
