Failures would risk interrupting access to the rear view camera of the vehicle , essential for parking maneuvers, but also for the controls of the air conditioning and Autopilot , at the base of the autonomous vehicle driving technology Tesla . According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) these malfunctions could lead to serious hazards and increase accidents.

Tesla Model S and Model X: recall in the USA

The problem underlying the defect reported by NHTSA a Tesla is about the worn flash memory chips used in sedan displays Model S sold between 2012 and the 2018 and SUVs Model X sold between 2016 and 2018. These vehicles equip an 8GB NAND eMMC flash memory chip inside the SoC NVIDIA Tegra 3 : The chips in question are subject to wear, according to the NHTSA agency.

Tesla has acknowledged the existence of the problem and agreed with the agency on the need to have repairs to all vehicles involved by 2028 . According to Tesla, “inevitably” these chips will cease to function sooner or later and most failures will occur in the 2022 .

The NHTSA has opened a formal investigation into problem last June and said Wednesday that the investigation is still ongoing, despite Tesla having already started the recall procedure. In recent months, Tesla has released over-the-air software updates which, among other things, aimed to resolve faults, but according to the NHTSA this is not sufficient to avoid possible accidents. This mainly depends on the fact that the update does not solve the rear camera problems, a requirement now mandatory for all new cars registered in the USA .

Not the first problem for Tesla vehicles’ large touchscreen displays. On the one hand, the US manufacturer has made infotainment systems a practically indispensable component for a modern car, but over the generations of its vehicles it has encountered various difficulties in terms of visual defects and the ability to reproduce content.
