After Bitcoin hit a new all-time high in December, thus reaching the old high of around 19. 700 US dollars from the year 2017 skipped and a few days later even the 20. 000 – US dollar mark was clearly taken, the most famous cryptocurrency continued to soar over Christmas and New Year and steadily achieved new record highs.

Back then, it was mainly small investors who drove the price – now it is also supported by many large companies such as PayPal and institutional investors.

Despite the new highs, very few Germans invest in crypto currencies. According to a survey by the digital association Bitkom, the majority of German citizens are skeptical of Bitcoin and other digital currencies. For two thirds of those surveyed, the concept is simply too complicated or only suitable for speculators who hope for a quick price gain. For 30% of the respondents, however, crypto currencies are a safe alternative to the established monetary system. Among the younger survey participants aged from 16 to 29 years this number is already at 43%, the acceptance is higher.

Around every fourth respondent believes that cryptocurrencies are suitable as a long-term investment. Only about 2% are already invested.
