The semiconductor market recorded, during the 2020 , a rebound in sales in positive zone after 2019 had been closed with a decrease of 12% on ‘last year. During the year that has just ended, semiconductor sales increased by 7.9%, reaching 450 billion dollars of equivalent value as indicated by Gartner in its most recent analysis.
The pandemic has affected the demand for semiconductors in a very different than initially foreseen : sectors such as the automotive and industrial sectors were heavily penalized by the pandemic, while the demand for useful products for work and teaching from home have driven the production of semiconductors for this type of device.
Hence the strong growth in the production of components for servers, especially hyperscale, PCs and tablets which allowed Intel to maintain the first position among semiconductor manufacturers worldwide: approximately 70 billion of equivalent value in 2020, with an annual growth of 3.7% and a market share of 15, 6%.
Samsung follows in second place with 12, 5% and a growth of 7.7% over the previous year, followed by SK Hynix and Micron with 5.6% and 4.9% of the market total respectively. Qualcomm ranks fifth, registering a significant growth of 31, 5%, percentage similar to that of Mediatek , Kioxia and NVIDIA which in the course of 2020 were all able to significantly increase its turnover.
This is still a very segmented market , with the first 10 companies able to collect 56% of total sales. The memory market was able in 2020 to record a clear leap forward, affecting the 44% of total semiconductor sales turnover. NAND Flash memories, in particular, saw turnover increase by 23, 9% in course of 2020 following a strong demand from the server sector and PC devices with a particularly limited market offer that led to an increase in prices during the first half of the year.
