The aim is to sustainably reduce the CO 2 emissions of the commercial vehicle fleet to reduce jobs, to keep jobs permanently and to give the economy a noticeable boost, explained Scheuer. “In addition, with the new funding guidelines we are also increasing traffic safety, as funding is expressly linked to the installation of a turning assistance system.”

Subsidy from industry with the climate argument During a top meeting with business in November, the federal government announced further aid worth billions in order to carry the German auto industry through the Corona crisis and to accelerate the change to more climate-friendly vehicles . This included a new truck scrapping bonus to get old commercial vehicles off the road and boost sales of newer models. According to earlier information, grants totaling one billion euros are planned for this.

There is still no obligation to use the turning assistant The funding guidelines state: “The new vehicle must have a turning assistance system (AAS).” If truck drivers who are seated at a higher elevation usually overlook cyclists or pedestrians in the blind spot next to their vehicle, serious accidents occur again and again. Turn assistants can send out warning signals or brake automatically. There is currently no mandatory introduction of these technical systems.
