The Taiwanese chip manufacturer TMSC published its quarterly figures for the third quarter 2020. As expected, there was a high increase in sales and profits, not least due to Apple.
Overall, sales increased compared to the third quarter of the previous year 21, 6%. The profit increased by a whole 29, 9%, compared to the second quarter this year there is still an increase of 13, 6%. In total, the turnover was just under 12, 4 billion US -Dollar. It is also interesting that the sales of 5-nm chips now account for 8% of total sales. So far, this technology has been used almost exclusively by Apple, who introduced the new A 14 in use the new iPhones and iPads. Once again it becomes clear how important Apple is as a customer for the group. It was only in August that TSMC announced that it would devote itself intensively to production in 3 and 2 nm in cooperation with a major customer. For this purpose, a research complex was set up in which major customers are working on future projects. According to media reports and rumors it is Apple.
The good quarterly figures have another reason. As part of the great demand for 5 nm chips from Apple, the chip manufacturer recently expanded the production volume of its most modern factory. The larger production capacities paid off, of course, with Apple as a major customer, which should not disappear too soon, and explains the majority of the increase in sales. It wasn’t until July that TMSC broke away an important customer. The trade relations with Huawei were terminated due to US sanctions against the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.
