Just in time for the appearance of .NET 5, Microsoft is also presenting a new release of its development environment for Apple systems. Visual Studio 2019 for Mac 8.8 is not just completely designed to work with the latest .NET version but also contains some improvements for Xamarin developers and allows debugging of Blazor WebAssembly applications (WASM).

Debugging Blazor WebAssembly With the previous release 8.7 of the IDE, Microsoft made it possible to debug Blazor Server for the first time, and Visual Studio supports 2019 for Mac also includes Blazor WebAssembly apps, so developers can now run their code step-by-step to debug the IDE. It is also possible to set and remove breakpoints and monitor the values of local variables. However, a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge) is still required for debugging, Apple’s Safari under macOS is not yet supported. Further details on debugging Blazor WebAssembly can be found in the associated documentation.

More performance with .NET 5 Developers who want to create .NET applications are available in Visual Studio 2019 for Mac 8.8 the complete range of functions of .NET 5 is available, including its numerous performance improvements. Garbage collection, pinned object heap and graduated compilation promise more consistent performance. With .NET 5 it will also be possible to accommodate new applications in a single executable and benefit from more compact container image sizes.

Support for version 9 of the C # programming language also promises some simplifications. The possibility of creating simpler programs directly on the top level and being able to do without the boilerplate code previously required provides a better overview. Deviating from the object-oriented approach of C #, records in the latest version also give developers the option of making objects immutable and giving them assign the behavior of values.
