Volkswagen will focus on the project ID.3 , dedicating the resources initially allocated to the e-Golf . If in the latter case it was a variation with respect to an already existing endothermic model, with ID.3 it is a vehicle born on a platform (MEB) from the beginning conceived for the electric mobility .

e-Golf was produced in small quantities, with the main objective of complying with the regulations that are progressively limiting the circulation of endothermic vehicles. Despite this, the e-Golf project met with public favor and achieved some success: among the production in Wolfsburg , started in 2014 and ended last summer, and production at Dresden , started in 2017 and ended today, VW has in fact produced 145. 561 e-Golf electric cars .

But now it’s time to focus on the ID.3: Volkswagen plans to produce it by the end of the year more units than the total of e-Golfs produced in six years. For this purpose, the production lines of the Dresden plant previously occupied by e-Golf will be used for the assembly of ID.3.

“The end of e-Golf marks the beginning of the final preparations for the launch of ID.3” said Danny Auerswald , head of the Dresden plant. Which, after the production center in Zwickau, thus becomes the second plant specialized in electric mobility for the Volkswagen Group. The two factories are also known as “Transparent Factory” (Gläserne Manufaktur) because these are modern glass buildings where the visitors can walk up to a few meters from the assembly line to closely observe the various stages of assembly of electric cars.

“The start of assembly of the ID.3 is great news for the workforce and just reward for the many efforts made in the site transformation that began in 2016” he added Thomas Aehlig , chairman of the works council of the Transparent Factory. “We have thus achieved an adequate level of job security and a positive future prospect for the site” .

VW has already delivered approx. 30. 00 0 electric cars ID.3 and plans to increase production to meet demand, which could be significant once the cheaper version of the vehicle is available next year.
