Western Digital today announced that Dropbox, one of the leading storage services in the cloud that we can count on today, will collaborate with the company to test the new Ultrastar hard drives from 20 TB with SMR architecture, a step forward in the manufacture of hard drives for high-density applications .
These units come with the latest technologies developed by Western Digital, such as the fifth generation of HelioSea l, as well as the industry’s first triple stage actuator arm and the first EAMR (Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording) implementation , these technologies being the key to increasing the density of storage dis wearable in a single unit.
Noteworthy that these units differ from the SMR units that we have seen so far at a fundamental level of the implementation of SMR technology, because in this case, will be the host that manages how write in these units , instead of being the unit itself that hides its nature from the system and manages itself autonomously.
The date on which companies will be able to purchase these units independently is unknown, but it is clear that, if Dropbox is to be equipped with these units, production is being satisfactory and should not take long to reach the market.
