The browser: There are days when you do it in the evening turned off the computer and didn’t use any other software. And yet – measured by its importance – you often don’t think much about it. In the current uplink episode, on the other hand, we worry intensely about browsers.

Jo Bager and Holger Bleich are there, who in c’t 2 / 2021 the cover story consisting of three articles wrote about browsers. Also on board: Sebastian Hilbig, Head of Platform Integration from heise-online web development, who reports from daily development practice.

First we clarify Which browsers are relevant at all 2021 – and which browser engines they use. Unlike a few years ago, only three engines are being further developed: Blink from Google, Gecko from Mozilla and Webkit from Apple. Is dwindling diversity a problem? Or is it even good because developers don’t have to test as much anymore? And why is it that giant companies like Microsoft are giving up developing their own engine?

The second half of the (video) podcast is about privacy : Which browser stands out positively, which one negatively? And what is to be thought of Google presenting itself as the avenger of the annoyed users and moving away from third-party cookies? Can you take that seriously? And what about Brave and his promise to reward users with crypto money for watching advertisements?

Last but not least, all the discussants tell us which browsers they use currently use privately. (Spoiler: The market leader is not doing well.)
