Users who receive updates for their pfSense system from the development strand of the Community Edition will find the WireGuard entry in the pfSense web interface from the snapshot with version number 2.5.

The integration of WireGuard at the kernel level took a little over a year. Now the VPN (Virtual Private Network) software can be used in pfSense as one of the most popular features of the community, writes the company Netgate in a blog entry. The FreeBSD kernel, on which pfSense is based in a modified form, has included the WireGuard module since November last year.

In the updated pfSense documentation, the developers praise the WireGuard VPN software for comparatively easy setup. WireGuard complements other VPN solutions such as IPsec, L2TP and OpenVPN, which are already included in pfSense.

Users can configure the WireGuard VPN via the pfSense web interface.

Try WireGuard If you want to try out WireGuard in pfSense now, you have to switch to the development strand in the update settings via the web interface or set up a new system and use an installation medium with a daily build. Corresponding images are available in the download area of ​​the pfSense homepage. Netgate advises that the development snapshots represent experimental software. With the upcoming release, pfSense 2.5 Community Edition, WireGuard will be available to all users.
