Xiaomi has introduced a new wireless fast charging technology for cell phones. The “Mi Wireless Charging Technology” pumps 80 watts wirelessly into the smartphone battery – significantly more than previous fast charging systems. A 4000 – mAh battery – a common size in current smartphones – can be up to 10 Charge percent.

According to Xiaomi, the wireless charging technology needs 8 minutes for half a charge, the system can achieve a full charge in 19 minutes. Previous technology from Xiaomi brought it up 50 watts wirelessly. So far it has only been used with the Mi Ultra, which is only offered in China.

There is also the catch with Xiaomi’s new technology: It is unclear when it will even be available – and how far it will spread. Proprietary fast charging technology only works if the smartphone and charger are coordinated with one another. Even Oppos’s comparable wireless charging technology, which is supposed to charge devices with 50 watts, has not yet arrived in any smartphone. Apple’s charging standard MagSafe is only 10 watts.

It’s faster with cables Who can charge cell phones as quickly and efficiently as possible would like to continue to use the cable anyway: The open standard USB Power Delivery creates up to 100 watts, other proprietary systems are even faster.
