LG’s rollable smartphone could be called LG Rollable

LG’s experimental division that so far brought you the Wing is working on a smartphone with a rollable OLED display, which is going to launch next year. The company has teased it at the end of its Wing announcement, and the latest rumors state the new device would be arriving in March.

If you were wondering what LG is going to call this unique handset, wonder no more, for the company has chosen to be as descriptive as possible. Hence, it’s filed a trademark application with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the name… LG Rollable. It’s simple and to the point – sort of like “Galaxy Fold”, before “Z” and “5G” got thrown into the mix.

The application was filed by intermediary Mitscherlich from Munich, which has also filed on behalf of LG before, including for a bunch of variations such as LG The Roll, LG Double Roll, LG Dual Roll, LG Bi-Roll, and LG Roll Canvas. Of those, in our humble opinion, LG Rollable just sounds the best – by far. What’s your opinion?

The trademark application mentions this is a smartphone, which may even support a stylus. Note that the images above are not leaked renders, but ones created based on what the phone could look like, just so you can get an idea of what to expect.

Nokia 8 V 5G UW is likely going to be unveiled for Verizon on November 9

Nokia’s first 5G phone, the 8.3, has already been released in some places, following its announcement way back in March, and now it looks like it may be headed to Verizon as well.

The official Nokia YouTube account posted, then promptly took down, a countdown timer to a livestream that would take place on November 9, when the Nokia 8 V 5G UW would become official. “5G UW” being Verizon suffix speak for “supports our mmWave network”. The carrier has plastered that onto a bunch of phones already, so it’s not surprising to see here.

We aren’t quite sure whether the Nokia 8 V 5G UW is just a rebranded Nokia 8.3, but since that’s the Finnish company’s only 5G model yet, what else could it be? Of course, the two may not be perfectly identical – some design variations could be seen, as well as slight spec differences.

It’s also unclear why Nokia took down that video, let’s hope the launch is still on for next week, in which case if you hang tight we’ll bring you more information as we get it.

Affordable ZTE Blade 20 5G announced with Dimensity 720G chip, big screen

ZTE just announced the Blade 20 5G in China, which looks a lot like the ZTE Blade A7s 2020, at least on the outside, that is. The rest of the specs are quite different.

For instance, the ZTE Blade 20 5G is based on the Dimensity 720 chipset and as the name of the handset implies, the SoC supports 5G connectivity. ZTE says that there’s some additional passive cooling (read heatsink) to prevent the chipset from overheating. The handset sports a notched, 6.52-inch IPS LCD panel with a rather tall, 20:9 aspect ratio and low 720 x 1600px resolution. To our surprise, the phone offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. We don’t know if it’s expandable at this time.

The camera setup on the back consists of a 16MP f/1.8 main camera, 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide unit and a 2MP sensor for depth information. Whereas the notch on the front houses an 8MP camera for selfies. The battery inside is 4,000 mAh and the Blade 20 5G ships with Android 10 out of the box and ZTE’s custom skin on top called MiFavor 10.5.

The asking price is CNY 1,499 ($224) and comes in Jazzy Gray and Mint Blue. No information regarding release date and price has been disclosed at the time.

OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 UK pre-orders detailed

OnePlus has detailed the availability of the Nord N10 5G and N100 smartphones for the UK.

The OnePlus Nord N10 5G will start its pre-orders on November 14 and become available from Amazon UK and OnePlus stores on November 27. The N10 5G comes in a single Midnight Ice variant with 6/128GB, priced at £329.

The OnePlus Nord N100 will go on pre-order tomorrow through Amazon UK and will be available in John Lewis, Amazon, Three and OnePlus’ own website on November 10. The Nord N100 comes in Midnight Frost with 4/64GB for £179.

OnePlus Nord vs OnePlus N10 5G vs OnePlus N100: What’s the difference?

(Pocket-lint) – OnePlus has three devices in its N series range: the OnePlus Nord (not available in the US), the OnePlus N10 5G and the OnePlus N100.

There are a number of differences between them, including price, so we’ve compared their specs here to help you work out which might be the right one for you if you’re in the market for a mid-range OnePlus device.

The OnePlus Nord is the smallest and lightest of the three N series handsets, whilst also being the most premium in terms of its design.

There’s a neat, pill-shaped rear camera housing in the top left corner, a dual punch hole camera on the front and an under display fingerprint sensor.

The N10 5G and N100 both have rectangular blocks for the their rear camera housings – like Samsung’s S20 series, singular punch hole front cameras and a physical fingerprint sensor on the back.

The Nord comes in Blue Marble, Gray Onyx and Gray Ash. The N10 5G comes in Midnight Ice and the N100 comes in Midnight Frost. None of the devices have an official IP rating.

The OnePlus Nord and OnePlus N10 5G share similar displays specifications, though the Nord has an AMOLED panel, while the N10 5G has an LCD panel, like the N100.

The Nord and N10 5G both have a Full HD+ resolution though and they are similar sizes, putting their pixel densities at pretty much on par, while the N100 has a lower resolution.

All three N series devices have a 20:9 aspect ratio and they all have a 90Hz refresh rate.

In terms of hardware, the OnePlus Nord is the most powerful of the three N series devices, offering the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset under its hood with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. There is no microSD support for storage expansion however.

The N10 5G meanwhile, runs on the still very capable Snapdragon 690 5G processor, offering 5G support like the Nord, and a healthy 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and microSD support for storage expansion.

The N100 drops down to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, but like the N10 5G, it has microSD support for storage expansion.

The N100 also has a huge 5000mAh battery capacity, which is larger than the Nord’s 4115mAh cell and the N10 5G’s 4300mAh cell. The Nord does support 30T Warp Charge though, as does the N10 5G, but the N100 does not.

The OnePlus Nord and OnePlus N10 5G both have a quad rear camera, but they offer different sensors, while the N100 has a triple rear camera.

The OnePlus Nord has a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.75 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens with a 119-degree field of view, a 5-megapixel depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4 and a 2-megapixel macro sensor, also with an aperture of f/2.4.

It’s capable of 1080p video at 30 and 60fps, as well as 4K at 30fps and 1080p slow motion at 240fps. Features include CINE aspect ratio video recording, UltraShot HDR, Nightscape, Portrait and Super Macro, among others.

The OnePlus N10 5G has a 64-megapixel main camera with an aperture of f/1.79, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens with 119-degree field of view, a 2-megapixel macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens with an aperture of f/2.4.

It has the same video capabilities as the Nord and it offers the same features too.

The OnePlus N100 has a 13-megapixel main camera with a f/2.2 aperture, 2-megapixel macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture and a 2-megapixel bokeh lens with an f/2.4 aperture. It offers 1080p video at 30fps and 720p video at 30fps. It doesn’t have slow motion video capabilities and it misses out on all the features mentioned above, except Portrait. It does have HDR, Pro Mode and AI Scene Detection though.

In terms of the front cameras, the Nord has a dual front camera comprised of a 32-megapixel main camera with f/2.45 aperture and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, also with an aperture of f/2.45. The N10 5G has a single front camera offering a 16-megapixel lens with an f/2.05 aperture and the N100 has an 8-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

Conclusion

For those where the OnePlus Nord and the N10 5G are both available, the Nord is the no brainer device to choose, especially with quite a small price difference between the two.

For those in regions where the OnePlus Nord isn’t available, the N10 5G is similar, dropping the power and RAM slightly and offering a slightly less premium design, but adding microSD capabilties, a larger battery, similar camera features and a similar display.

The N100 knocks the price down, adds microSD and delivers a huge battery and the same refresh rate as the more premium N10 5G and Nord, but it takes a hit in other areas, like the camera, display and hardware.

Samsung unveils W21 5G – a more premium Galaxy Z Fold2 for China

Samsung unveiled a second version of its 2020 foldable flagship to China, though without the Galaxy name. The phone is very much based on the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, but will be known as the “Samsung W21 5G” in the country.

The hardware is nearly identical – a 7.6” Dynamic AMOLED 2X display nestles inside, a 6.23” Super AMOLED with Gorilla Glass Victus remains on the outside. The W21 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 865+ chipset and in China the phone gets the maximum memory configuration of 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.

Strangely, the W21 is slightly taller than the Z Fold2, but the battery remains the same – 4,500 mAh with 25W wired and 11W wireless charging. The triple 12MP camera is identical as well.

The only major difference is that the phone now has two SIM slots, to better tailor it to the local market (the launch is done in partnership with China Telecom). The back looks different too, a gold color with vertical stripes.

Anyway, the Samsung W21 5G is now available for pre-order at a price of CNY 20,000. You’ll find it at the official Samsung online store, pre-orders start at 20:20 local time.

Vivo S7e 5G is official with a 64 MP camera, 33W fast charging

vivo introduced a new phone for its domestic market called vivo S7e 5G. It comes with Dimensity 720 5G chipset, triple main camera, and fast charging.

The vivo S7e 5G has a lot in common with the vivo Y73 5G, announced last month – same chipset, same 8/128 GB memory and even the camera placement and footprint are the same. However, here the main shooter on the back has a 64MP sensor, up from 48MP. The other two cams in this triple setup remain the same – 8MP ultrawide unit and 2MP depth sensor.

At the front the vivo S7e 5G has a 6.44” OLED with Full HD+ resolution and a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera. That one packs a 32MP sensor and f/2.0 lens – another upgrade from the Y73s that had a 16MP sensor.

While the battery capacity remains 4,100mAh, now the S7e 5G comes with 33W fast charging through the USB-C port. The phone also offers a 3.5mm audio jack on the top, dual 4G VoLTE and 5G support.

Vivo S7e 5G has three paint jobs – Mirror Black, Phantom Blue, and Silver Moon, the latter two being neat-looking gradients. The company did not reveal how much would the phone cost – the price will be revealed on November 11 which is Singles’ Day – one of the biggest shopping holidays in China.

Oppo K7x announced with Dimensity 720 and 90Hz screen

Oppo introduced the K7 5G in August and today the company added another member to the K series, dubbed Oppo K7x.

The Oppo K7x is built around a 6.5″ FullHD+ LCD that has a 90Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz. The screen has a pixel density of 405 ppi and a maximum brightness of 600 nits.

Under the hood, the Oppo K7x has a Dimensity 720 SoC paired with 6GB RAM. The smartphone runs Android 10-based ColorOS 7.2 out of the box and has 128GB of storage onboard.

For photography, the K7x comes with a total of five cameras – a 16MP snapper on the front, with the 48MP primary camera on the back joined by an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor units.

The rest of the highlights of the K7x include a side-mounted fingerprint reader, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, and dual-mode 5G.

The Oppo K7x packs a 5,000 mAh battery with 30W fast charging and has two color options – Black Mirror and Blue Shadow (machine translated from Chinese). All this might sound familiar to you because the K7x is actually a rebranded Realme V5 5G.

This would be a welcome improvement over the two previous Z Flips which only came with a single downward-firing speaker, which felt like a letdown on such a high-end device. Other predictions for the upcoming Z Fold 2 include a larger and more useful 1.1-inch outer display, triple camera setup and a 120Hz display.

In related news display analyst, Ross Young claims the Z Flip 2’s launch will be moved over to the summer and it will not launch alongside the S21 series in January/February. In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more clues surrounding the Z Flip 2.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro review

Introduction

This year, Apple is giving potential buyers more choice than ever. We already reviewed the iPhone 12, and now it’s time for the 12 Pro. Besides having double the storage, a stainless steel frame, and different colors than the 12, the 12 Pro upgrades are mostly camera-related. It’s got a proper telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, a LiDAR Scanner for AR applications and low-light focusing, and it can take portrait shots with Night mode. This is not the longest list of upgrades we’ve seen, so choosing between these two iPhones is going to be a tough one.

At least compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, the list of new features is longer. There is a faster processor, 5G connectivity, a larger screen with better shatter resistance, Night mode for the UW camera, Dolby Vision video recording, MagSafe support, and the new LiDAR.

But most importantly, there is also the new design that Apple is introducing with the 12th Series, and it instantaneously makes all previous iPhones look less modern.

While we could hardly wait to see the iPhones with this new design, we can’t say Apple has checked off all points on our wishlist. The iPhone 12 Pro was supposed to premiere with a new 120Hz ProMotion display, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Rumor has it that for some reason, Apple had to choose between 5G and HRR OLED (we think it’s battery life). Well, we all know how that went down – with our without carrier support – Apple’s homepage now proudly carries a huge 5G logo. We can’t deny the iPhone UI looks fast and fluid but forgoing the high-refresh-rate screen for yet another year is a flagrant omission in our books.

Also, Apple’s questionable decision to keep the camera hardware upgrades only to the iPhone 12 Pro Max further takes away some of the appeal of the 12 Pro. Not everyone will want a big phone, and Apple is making it impossible to get the new 12MP sensor with larger pixels and sensor-shift stabilization without going for the 12 Pro Max. In our minds, the iPhone 12 Pro deserved to have the same level of camera hardware instead of relying on the last year’s camera tech.

Unboxing the Apple iPhone 12 Pro

Finally, in one of the most controversial moves in the industry, Apple announced they are no longer bundling a charger or headphones with this phone that costs more than a thousand bucks.

This year, the iPhone 12 Pro comes in one of the slimmest smartphone boxes we have ever opened. Inside, you’ll find only the phone itself and a USB-C/Lightning cable. No charger or headphones here. Apple expects you to already have these or, better yet, buy them separately.

Inside the box, there is also a small sleeve, where you’d find the SIM ejection PIN and an Apple logo sticker. Apple should have saved the hassle of including those – after all, we all have those already, right? Come to think of it, nobody needs a box either – just ship the iPhone 13 in bubble wrap.

Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro tops AnTuTu’s October flagship charts, Xiaomi rules the mid-range

AnTuTu has published its monthly top 10 charts for best-performing flagships and mid-rangers and the Huawei Mate 40 Pro tops the first one. The average score of all devices that ran AnTuTu 8 is 685,339 but with the performance mode turned on, the Mate 40 Pro can go even beyond 720,000 points.

The second place takes the iQOO 5 Pro and iQOO 5 both running the Snapdragon 865+ chipset. The Asus ROG Phone 3 takes 7th place falling behind some considerably cheaper devices like the Redmi K30S. In any case, Huawei’s Kirin 9000 is holding the title for now until Qualcomm fires back with the Snapdragon 875 in a few months’ time.

In the mid-range ranking the Redmi 10X Pro 5G and the Redmi 10X 5G reign thanks to the Dimensity 820. Both handsets achieved over 390,000 points. The third place takes the Honor 30 rocking the Kirin 985 chipset. It’s interesting to note that the majority of the list is occupied by the Kirin 985 and the Kirin 820 whereas Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G only features in 9th and 10th place.

Keep in mind that these scores are all average scores for phones that have ran the benchmark a statistically significant number of times.
