This simple dock turns your Apple Watch into a bedside orb

Have you ever tried using your Apple Watch as a bedside clock, but given up because the screen is just too dang small? Well, boy do we have a $49.99 dock for you. The NightWatch is combination charging dock, magnifying glass, and acoustic amplifier, bringing together these functions to turn the Apple Watch’s nightstand mode into a bona fide bedside alarm, complete with a tap-to-wake feature to show you the time.

We’ve previously covered novelty docks that turn the Apple Watch into a miniature Macintosh replica or an iPod. But the NightWatch attempts to make the Apple Watch work better in nightstand mode, by making its screen bigger and easier to read and using “integrated sound channels’ to amplify the sound of your alarm.

You slot in your existing charging puck behind the watch.
Image: NightWatch

It’s a pretty simple accessory, all told, and basically consists of a single block of polished lucite. That means it doesn’t come with its own charger, so you’ll have to slot in your existing charging puck, and the advertised “tap display” seems to just be relying on the fact that the Apple Watch’s screen will light up at the slightest nudge. “Even nudging or tapping the table might work,” the NightWatch’s support page says.

The NightWatch’s launch comes at a potentially awkward time. Last year Apple added a new sleep tracking feature to the Apple Watch, which means many people now sleep with their watches on their wrists rather than on their nightstand. But if you’re not interested in tracking your sleep data, the NightWatch supports all Apple Watches, is available for pre-order now over on its website, and will be coming to Amazon next week. Shipping is due later this month.

amazon-brings-its-cashierless-tech-to-a-full-size-grocery-store-for-the-first-time

Amazon brings its cashierless tech to a full-size grocery store for the first time

Amazon’s cashierless Just Walk Out technology is coming to a full-size grocery store for the first time, the company has announced. The new 25,000 square foot Amazon Fresh store is significantly bigger than the 10,400 square foot Amazon Go Grocery store it opened last year, or its standard 1,200 and 2,300 square feet Go stores, marking a minor milestone as Amazon scales up its technology. The new store will be Amazon’s fourteenth Fresh location in the US when it opens on June 17th in Bellevue, Washington.

When Amazon previously opened a 35,000 square foot Amazon Fresh store last year using its high-tech Dash Carts, it prompted speculation that the company’s Just Walk Out technology wasn’t suitable for larger stores. But Amazon has always maintained that Just Walk Out, which uses a series of overhead cameras and pressure sensitive shelves to automatically detect what shoppers put in their carts, can scale up to stores of any size.

“Bringing Just Walk Out technology to a full-size grocery space with the Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue showcases the technology’s continued ability to scale and adapt to new environments and selection” said Amazon’s vice president of Physical Retail and Technology, Dilip Kumar. “I’m thrilled it’ll help even more customers enjoy an easier and faster way to shop and can’t wait to get their feedback on this latest Just Walk Out offering.”

Amazon says that when customers arrive at the new store in Bellevue, Washington, they’ll be prompted to pick a checkout option, and that traditional checkouts will still be available for customers that want them. If they decide to use Just Walk Out, they can enter the store by scanning a QR code in the Amazon app, inserting a linked credit or debit card, or scanning their palm. Once they leave the store, they’re automatically billed for the items in their virtual cart, and a receipt is sent digitally to them.

The new store uses of Just Walk Out, but it won’t feature the high-tech Dash shopping carts Amazon debuted in its first Fresh grocery store last August. Amazon declined to say whether it would be bringing Just Walk Out tech to its pre-existing Amazon Fresh stores in the US. Meanwhile in the UK, the technology appears in Fresh-branded locations that are similar in size to Amazon’s Go stores in the US.

In addition to Amazon’s own stores, the company also provides Just Walk Out to third-party retailers. Amazon says Hudson markets, OTG CIBO Express, and Delaware North are three external retailers that have started to roll out the technology at various locations.

amazon-echo-dot-4th-gen-vs-echo-dot-3rd-gen:-what-are-the-key-differences?

Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen vs Echo Dot 3rd Gen: What are the key differences?

(Pocket-lint) – Amazon’s line of Echo Dot speaker was one of the more settled and consistent in tech over the last few years – its puck-shaped design was clearly doing something right as the Alexa speaker sold in its multitudes.

However, few things in tech last forever and Amazon now has an entirely new look for the Echo Dot, very much a shrunken-down version of the new mainline Echo. It’s a radical departure, and with the 3rd Generation Echo Dot still very much on sale, you might be wondering which of the two you should pick up. We’ve compared them in detail across a few categories, to help you decide.

squirrel_widget_2683192

Design

  • 4th gen: 100 x 100 x 89mm
  • 3rd gen: 43 x 99 x 99mm

There’s no getting around it – Amazon has changed the Echo Dot’s design pretty radically when it comes to looks, going from that distinctive puck shape to a globe of a smart speaker in the new version. That has also had an inescapable impact on the Dot’s size – it’s got a lot taller, effectively. The actual footprint of the speaker is very similar to the previous version, but with a lot more height.

While that’s given Amazon a bunch of space to fit in more tech, as we’ll show later, it does mean that the new Echo Dot won’t necessarily fit in as many nooks and crannies as its predecessor. The new version is also a little heavier, too, as a result of its increased size but also because of the aluminium used in its construction, compared to the more plastic feel of the older speaker.

Otherwise, both speakers share the Alexa light-strip to let you know when the voice assistant is listening, or turned off, as well as four buttons on the top to let you adjust the volume, mute the speaker or confirm a range actions.

You can get both generations in black, grey and light blue colours, but a pink option is reserved for the older speaker at present. Both generations are also available with an embedded clock display for at-a-glance timing information, for a small bump in the price.

Finally, the new Echo Dot also has two variant designs aimed at children, which are perfect if you’re looking for a smart speaker to put in a little one’s bedroom or playroom.

squirrel_widget_2683193

Sound quality

  • Both generations: 1.6-inch speaker

Interestingly, Amazon hasn’t made a particular reinvention of the sound design behind the fabric shroud of the new Echo Dot – it’s still got that 1.6-inch speaker to provide the volume. Now, going by the performance of the older Echo Dot, that’s no issue – for a small speaker, the Dot line has been producing really impressive sound quality for some time, so no change isn’t bad news.

That said, the increased size of the newer Dot does give you some improvement in the sound quality. There’s less vibration through the body of the speaker and that means it performs better at higher volumes, better placed to fill the room with sound. It’s not hugely different, but it is better.

On both models, there is also a 3.5mm port in case you want to pipe audio out via cable.

Alexa and smart home connectivity

When it comes to Alexa, you’ll get pretty similar experiences on both generations of Echo Dot speakers – as a lot of the assistant’s processing is done in the cloud regardless.

However, the new AZ1 Neural Edge chip that’s in the newer Echo Dot does mean that Alexa should be slightly faster and more responsive on the newer speaker, as you might expect.

Their smart home integration potential, meanwhile, is identical – anything you can do on an older Echo Dot will still work on the new spherical model, and the reverse should be true, too.

Price and conclusions

As Amazon often does with its product refreshes, the new Echo Dot has debuted at the same price as the old one, so there’s no change there. However, the older puck-shaped model has had a price cut to reflect the fact that it’s older.

However, the margin isn’t very big – and we think it’s really the design that should sway most people.

If you’re a fan of the new spherical look, then the newer speaker is going to be right up your street, but if you look at it and can’t get on board, the older Echo Dot might be more palatable. Ultimately, as with so many things, it comes down to taste!

beats-announces-$149.99-studio-buds-earbuds-with-active-noise-cancellation

Beats announces $149.99 Studio Buds earbuds with active noise cancellation

Beats today announced its second pair of true wireless earbuds, the new Beats Studio Buds. Priced at $149.99 and available in red, black, or white, the Studio Buds have a much different, more compact design than the previous Powerbeats Pro. There are no ear hooks on these, nor any stems, and that results in a very lightweight, comfortable fit. Preorders start today in the US and Canada from Apple and other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, and the earbuds will be available in stores on June 24th.

The Studio Buds include active noise cancellation, IPX4 water and sweat resistance, and can last for up to five hours on a charge. (If you leave noise cancellation off, they can eke out eight hours of continuous playback. They also use USB-C for charging — there’s no wireless charging, unfortunately — and either earbud can be used independently.

The Studio Buds have a sleek, lightweight design.
Image: Beats

Interestingly, Beats is supporting both iOS and Android features with the Studio Buds. On iPhone, you get the familiar, easy AirPods-like setup and Control Center integration. They can also do hands-free “Hey Siri” commands. On Android, Beats now works with Fast Pair and Google’s Find My Device features.

Beats came up with an all-new acoustic architecture design for the Studio Buds, which have 8.2-millimeter drivers, and the company claims you can expect “outstanding stereo separation and low harmonic distortion across the frequency curve so you hear every note.”

If you’re wondering how the Studio Buds might stack up to the AirPods Pro or other competitors, I’ve been spending some time testing the just-announced earbuds, and you can read my full review of the Beats Studio Buds here.

amazon-echo-4-gen-vs-amazon-echo-3-gen-:-what’s-the-difference?

Amazon Echo 4-gen vs Amazon Echo 3-gen : What’s the difference?

(Pocket-lint) – Amazon has a new generation of Echo and for the first time in a long time, a completely new design. Gone is the cylinder as the Echo goes spherical.

But that’s not the only change for this new Echo device, as it expands in other areas too. Read on and we’ll explore the differences between new 2020 Amazon Echo and the older 2019 Amazon Echo.

Design

  • Echo 4-gen: 144 x 144 x 133mm, 970g
  • Echo 3-gen: 148 x 99 x 99mm, 780g

The most obvious shift is in design, moving from that cylinder we’ve been used to for the past couple of years to a sphere instead. That means it’s actually a little bigger than the previous Echo, as it’s now almost the same height, but obviously wider.

The new Echo is a little heavier too, and that’s to be expected from the larger size and additional speakers.

The overall look is similar, however, with a fabric coating, so gone is the plastic top with buttons. Now you have buttons integrated into the fabric on the top of the device. The light ring also moves from the top of the old speaker to the bottom of the new, and this is something that divides opinion – some think it looks better, some think the light ring is harder to see.

The colours are similar – charcoal and blue for both, with the new Echo coming in white which is similar to the sandstone of the previous version. Both have a 3.5mm connection.

Overall, quite the change in design.

Squirrel_widget_2683191

Speakers and sound quality

  • Echo 4-gen: 3.0in woofer, 2x 0.8in tweeter
  • Echo 3-gen: 3.0in woofer, 0.8in tweeter

One of the main points about the previous Echo models was the 360-degree audio. The arrangement of the drivers was designed to fire out the sound all around the device, meaning it didn’t necessarily matter where you place the device and how. Let’s face it, the sound quality from the 3-gen Echo was also very good, considering the price.

The new Echo 2020 has a 3.0-inch woofer (as did the previous model) to provide rich depth to music, but this is now towards the top of the device. It sits over the two 0.8-inch tweeters which provide the higher range detail. The previous Echos only had one tweeter.

By adding in two tweeters, the new Echo is more directional – there’s a front and a back to this speaker, rather than it offering that 360-degree sound.

The advantage, however, is that it offers stereo separation in its own right, with Amazon saying that will adapt the music to suit the acoustics of the room you put it in. Both are powered by Dolby, but the addition of stereo in to the Echo fourth-gen means that it sounds more dynamic.

Squirrel_widget_167738

Connectivity and smart home skills

  • Echo 4-gen: Alexa, Zigbee, Sidewalk, BLE Mesh
  • Echo 3-gen: Alexa

There’s big shift in the internal connectivity skills too. While both offer Alexa – and Alexa has all the same Skills across devices – the new Echo now gets the hardware to support functions that previously only the Echo Plus had.

The addition of a Zigbee controller and Amazon Sidewalk mean that the new Echo can be a hub for a lot more things. You’ll now be able to connect and setup devices directly from this Echo and control them using the Zigbee controller.

Amazon Sidewalk is now integrated into the new Echo and this provides longer range, low bandwidth connectivity for devices. It’s designed to extend the range, providing connectivity if your Wi-Fi goes down or to make connections right to the end of the garden for motion sensors. It will also work with Tile, to aid detection of devices, including for those outside your house. The new Echo also supports Bluetooth meshing, again providing a hub for greater home connectivity.

While Alexa is the same on these devices, the new Echo has been positioned to do a lot more around the home – perhaps not now, but certainly in the future.

Conclusions

What’s perhaps surprising is that the 2020 Echo lands at the same price as the 2019 Echo, but packs in a lot more technology. When it comes to choosing a model, it would be hard to opt for the older, unless you really want a matching pair.

With added speakers and a refreshed design, what the new Echo really presents is a step forward in smart home connectivity. With those additional controls, it has the potential to be the foundation for a lot more smart home devices in the future, while also sounding a little better too.

far-cry-6’s-new-trailer-is-an-intense-introduction-to-a-terrifying-giancarlo-esposito

Far Cry 6’s new trailer is an intense introduction to a terrifying Giancarlo Esposito

After introducing the guerrilla freedom fighter protagonist for Far Cry 6, Ubisoft’s new trailer pivots back to the highlight of any new installment: its villain, Antón Castillo.

Played by Giancarlo Esposito, the despotic leader of the fictional island nation of Yara is seen making his terrifying entrance onboard a boat where the protagonist Dani is attempting to flee with a group, one of them who turns out to be Diego, Castillo’s son.

The cinematic is a chilling introduction as he chews the scenery with his charisma before unleashing his brutality, which is surely the turning point for what making Dani join the resistance to overthrow the Yaran tyrant.

The Far Cry series is of course known for its iconic villains, and Ubisoft were keen to leverage this by announcing post-launch plans for Far Cry 6 that will actually let players see the other side of the story from past games.

In the Far Cry 6 season pass, you’ll get to play as Vaas Montenegro (Far Cry 3), Pagan Min (Far Cry 4), and Joseph Seed (Far Cry 5) in three unique episodes as you delve inside these legendary villains’ minds to uncover their backstories and experience what it’s like to be the villain. Of course, as Esposito had said in an interview with Geoff Keighley during the Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live stream, none of them think they’re the bad guy.

Michael Mando, Troy Baker, and Greg Bryk, also return to reprise the voice roles of Vaas, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed respectively.

As an added bonus, the season pass will also include the cyberpunk-themed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Far Cry 6 launches on October 7th on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC, Stadia, and Amazon Luna.

Watch the first trailer for Ubisoft’s gorgeous Avatar game

Ubisoft capped off its E3 keynote with a big surprise: a first look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The next-gen take on James Cameron’s world looks gorgeous, and Ubisoft says it’s being built with its own Snowdrop engine at internal studio Massive.

Here’s the story premise:

In this new, standalone story, play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora. Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters, and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.

The game appears to be built with next-gen hardware in mind. Frontiers of Pandora is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S, along with cloud services Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.

It also isn’t the only sci-fi universe Ubisoft is exploring: the publisher previously revealed that it was making an open-world Star Wars game, which is also been made by Massive.

Novak Djokovic can win his second French Open title tomorrow – if he can beat talented Greek pro Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Men’s Singles Final at the Roland-Garros. Make sure you know to watch a Djokovic vs Tsitsipas live stream for free from anywhere.

Played at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris annually, the French Open attracts the world’s top tennis players. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal found themselves in the same half of the draw but Federer withdrew at the quarter-final stage to protect his recovering knee injury, leaving the path clear for a Nadal–Djokovic semi-final.

World number three Nadal – the most successful player ever to have competed at the French Open – took a marathon first set but Djokovic levelled the match with the second, took the third set 7-6 and then cruised to victory in the fourth set. Nadal’s dream of 21st major title are now on hold.

Djokovic’s opponent, Stefanos Tsitsipas, faced a tough challenge it the semis. The Greek pro took the first two sets before 24-year-old German Alexander Zverev took the next two to level the match. But, in the end, it was Tsitsipas’ experience that won out as some 5000 Parisian fans cheered a masterful display (not to mention a few baseline zingers).

Djokovic has looked at home throughout this year’s Roland-Garros but can he fully recover from Friday night’s epic semi-final win over Nadal? Or will Tsitsipas win his first ever Grand Slam title? New balls please!

Ubisoft’s extreme sports MMO Riders Republic is launching in September

Ubisoft’s upcoming extreme sports MMO, Riders Republic, will launch on September 2nd, the company announced at its Ubisoft Forward show on Saturday.

In a nearly five-minute trailer, Ubisoft showed off some of the sports that you can play, including biking, snowboarding, and even wing suiting. The game will have a variety of modes, including mass races (with more than 50 players on next-gen consoles) and six vs. six trick battles. And you’ll also be able to customize your player with all sorts of gear — in the trailer, I think I spotted a biker with a built-in ice cream stand on their bike, for example.

Riders Republic will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC when it launches in September, and the game will support crossplay and cross-save across all platforms, Ubisoft says. You can register now for the chance to participate in upcoming betas for the game ahead of launch.

blue-origin-auctions-new-shepard-ride-with-jeff-bezos-for-$28-million

Blue Origin auctions New Shepard ride with Jeff Bezos for $28 million

Blue Origin’s month-long auction for a trip to the edge of space with its billionaire founder Jeff Bezos ended on Saturday with a closing price of $28 million. The flight aboard New Shepard, slated for July 20th, will mark the company’s first mission flying humans, in which the winning bidder will bask in a few minutes of microgravity with Bezos, his brother Mark, and one other passenger before returning back to land.

The identity of the winner will be kept secret for a few weeks — “we need to complete some final paperwork with them,” says Blue Origin’s astronaut sales director Ariane Cornell during the live broadcast. The auction took place in a Boston, Massachusetts facility owned by RR Auction, the hosting company. Dozens of telephone operators were gathered in a room representing 20 bidders, who brought the starting price of $4.8 million to $28 million in under 10 minutes. The proceeds will go to Blue Origin’s nonprofit charity Club For The Future.

“The more you pay for it the more you enjoy it,” the auctioneer said at one point.

New Shepard is a 60-foot-tall reusable rocket designed to shoot a gumdrop-shaped capsule with seats for six roughly 62 miles above ground to the edge of space, a roughly 10-minute mission that gives passengers a sight-seeing experience in microgravity for about three minutes. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon who will step down as its CEO next month, announced last Monday he’ll be riding the same mission with his brother Mark to fulfill his lifelong dream.

The $28 million price tag for the suborbital trip is roughly half the price for a seat on an orbital mission. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, which has only flown government astronauts to the International Space Station, will launch its first private astronaut mission to orbit later this year, with four passengers spending roughly three days in orbit.

Blue Origin, which has test-flown the fully reusable New Shepard rocket 15 times since 2015, hasn’t set a price for its passenger seats — years of market research and price data from the month-long auction could inform its starting price point. Cornell said the company will reach out to “the most competitive bidders from today to offer them access.” The fourth and final passenger will be announced soon, she said, without indicating whether it’d be a Blue Origin employee, one of the competitive bidders, or someone else.

Lamar Odom vs Aaron Carter takes place today, Friday, 11th June, live from the iconic Showboat Hotel on the Atlantic City boardwalk (one for Sopranos fans).

Former NBA basketball star Lamar Odom, aka Khloe Kardashian’s ex, is bursting with confidence. Possibly because he’s over six inches taller than Carter and has a huge reach advantage. “I’m gonna put him to sleep early,” said Odom earlier this week.

Why is Odom fighting? He’s friends with MMA star Nate Robinson, who was knocked out in the second round by Jake Paul recently. Odom believes he may have a shot at avenging that loss – if he can outbox Carter.

As for Aaron Carter, the US rapper and producer is best known for his song, Aaron’s Party. He is the brother of Nick Carter, of Backstreet Boys fame.

“I’m really excited to be fighting Lamar Odom,” said Carter. “This is a crazy matchup. It’s like David and Goliath. He’s 6 foot 7, I’m 6’1. So it’s gonna be kind of crazy, know I can [beat Lamar]. Come June 12, like I said, like Apollo Creed said, ‘I’m gonna drop him like a bad habit,’ and I mean that.”
