Retailer Reveals Rocket Lake-S, Comet Lake Refresh Pricing

2Compute, a retailer over in Belgium, recently added Intel’s approaching 11th Generation Rocket Lake-S processors to its product catalog. The store has reportedly revealed the basic specifications and pricing for the 14nm chips. As is customary, we recommend approaching listings about unreleased hardware with caution, even if the listings come from a trusted retailer. It’s also important to highlight that computer hardware is typically more expensive outside the U.S.

As evidenced by the F-series, Intel will continue to offer iGPU-less models for this generation. In the case of Rocket Lake-S, the processors arrive without the 12th-generation Xe LP graphics engine. Logically, the F-series and KF-series SKUs will cost less than their counterparts due to the lack of an iGPU. If 2Compute’s pricing is even close to Intel’s official MSRP, we could be looking at a price difference up to $29.

Rocket Lake-S debuts with the Sunny Cove microarchitecture and maxes out at eight cores. Therefore, it’s not really fair to compare it to Comet Lake-S, which is based on the aging Skylake microarchitecture and wields up to 10 cores. However, with every new generation, consumers logically want to know how much they’re paying for new technology.

We’ll use 2Compute’s Comet Lake-S pricing as a reference for an apples-to-apples comparison to Rocket Lake-S. In the interest of keeping it simple, we only compared the three principal K-series models from both processor families.

2Compute sells the Core i9-10900K, Core i7-10700K and Core i5-10600K for $555, $398 and $282, respectively. Therefore, the Core i9-11900K and Core i7-11700K could cost up to 8.8% and 14.3% more, respectively, while the Core i5-11600K may arrive with a 3.9% higher price tag.

So far, rumors have pointed to Intel refreshing its Comet Lake processors for Core i3 and below SKUs. If you’re after PCIe 4.0, you’ll ultimately have to look at the Core i5 and above models. In terms of Comet Lake Refresh, the recipe will be the same except that the reheated chips will come flaunting improve clock speeds.

The Core i3-10300 and Core i3-10100 are available at 2Compute for $161 and $134, respectively. The rewarmed versions are seemingly 6.8% and 4.5% more expensive, respectively.

Although we can’t speak for all models, Rocket Lake-S may cost up to 14% more expensive than Comet Lake-S. Of course, Intel has promised IPC gains up to 19%, and there’s also the matter of PCIe 4.0 support. However, we have to be aware that Rocket Lake-S is most likely the last wave of processors to pass through the LGA1200 socket so an upgrade right now does require a bit of meditation.

Intel to introduce memory overcloking support on H570 and B560 motherboards

It looks like Intel will finally introduce memory overclocking support on non-Z motherboards, starting with the 500-series. By enabling memory overclocking support, systems equipped with H570 or B560 motherboards will allow memory modules to operate above their official specifications for increased performance.

Unlike AMD, which offers overclocking support on almost all of its chipsets, Intel has, up until now, been locking memory overclocking behind its “Z” chipsets. Now it seems Intel has finally changed this position and will introduce memory overclocking to its mid-tier motherboards.

With the Comet Lake-S platform, the Intel Core i9 and i7 CPUs supported DDR4-2933 memory, but the i5, i3, and Pentium chips could only be paired with up to DDR4-2666 memory. Due to the lack of memory overclocking, H470 and B460 motherboards would only run memory at a maximum of DDR4-2933. As per @momomo_us‘ post (via Tom’s Hardware), the Rocket Lake-S platform is expected to be arranged differently from Comet Lake-S, with the Core i9, i7, and i5 supporting up to DDR4-3200, while the Core-i3 and Pentium processors would be maxed at DDR4-2666.

The fact that different maximum supported memory speeds depends on the processor families, might be a sign that the 11th Gen Core processors lineup consists of Rocket Lake-S processors and refresh Comet Lake-S processors. The CPUs supporting up to DDR4-3200 would be Rocket Lake-S processors (Core i9 to i5), while the CPUs featuring a maximum memory speed of DDR4-2666 could be the refreshed Comet Lake-S parts.

Given that users will need at least a Core i5 processor to run DDR4-3200 memory, it is expected that H570 and B560 motherboards will only be capable of memory overclocking when paired with Core i9/i7/i5 CPUs.

It’s no secret that Intel’s 11th Generation Rocket Lake-S CPUs are nearing. Intel has yet to announce exact specs, pricing or even as much as a launch date. However, the vendor did dish out a load of juicy technical details on the Core i9-11900K flagship earlier this week for CES. CES also brought an onslaught of Z590 and B560 motherboard announcements for the new chips, which indicates that a launch date is nearing.

With that in mind, Noctua has started prepping its compatibility list for which coolers work on which boards. And it’s already made good progress. Thus far, the list comprises over 30 Z590 boards and 11 B560 planks. The list is far from complete, but many of the most popular options are already accounted for.

Remember that this is a tedious process, as Noctua has a ton of coolers in its arsenal. It also tests discontinued models for a total of 55 coolers. So to already have this information at our disposal ahead of launch is nothing short of impressive.

You can find Noctua’s Z590 compatibility list here and the B560 list is here. If a cooler is incompatible, you’ll see a red cross with your motherboard and cooler combo and the reasoning why. But if it does fit, you’ll see a big green checkmark.

That said, some coolers require upgrades to their SecuFirm mounting kits to fit on the LGA1200 CPU socket. But Noctua almost always provides these free of charge, including for discontinued coolers (assuming you have proof of purchase).

Intel B560 and H570 chipsets will allow DDR4 memory to be overclocked

In recent years, Intel’s strategy regarding its different chipsets for each new generation of processors it was based on separating by ranges, allowing memory and CPU overclock functions only to motherboards with Z series chipsets. In this way, if we had a board with H or B chipset, no matter how much we had a K series processor with an unlocked multiplier, it would not be possible to increase its speed or that of its memories .

That changes from now on, and the company has activated the possibility of overclocking, at least of the DDR4 memories , on their new chipsets H 570 and B 560 for undéci Intel Core processors 3rd generation “Rocket Lake-S” , of which we were able to learn some details at this CES 2021.

Intel joins AMD by allowing memory overclocking on its mid-range chipsets, although the processor OC will only work on the Z 590

It is about for the first time in a long time that it is possible to overclock memory on chipsets that do not belong to the Z line. Unfortunately, the possibility of overclocking the speeds of the different Processor cores will remain exclusive to the Z chipset 590. .

Of course, it will be necessary to use Core i5 or higher range processors, including Core i7 and Core i9, to be able to use memories above 3. 200 MHz DDR4. Core i3 processors will stay with support for DDR4 – 2667 MHz.

In an unexpected move at the start of CES 2021, Microsoft added a new Surface device – but it’s not a wholly new device, rather the Surface Pro 7 Plus (or 7+) is a modified Surface Pro.

The GE76 is available in 15- and 17-inch forms, offering a super-fast 300Hz refresh rate screen – only the Razer lade 15 (featured above) can best that.

In addition to the standard GE76 Raider – which features an RGB light bar at the front – there’s also a special edition version, called Dragon Edition (pictured), which has an etched in dragon emblem. How about that for standing out?

Gigabyte updated its Aorus and Aero lines, featuring the latest Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics and up to Intel Core i9 processors – putting it up there against the likes of MSI (featured above).

Top of the stack is the Gigabyte Aero 17G – priced from $2,499 – featuring a 17.3-inch screen with up to a super-fast 300Hz refresh rate. Or you can pick a 4K OLED panel with high dynamic range instead.

That’s some serious gaming clout with respect to visuals right there.

Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 2 i

Now for something out-and-out different: a dual-screen laptop. But the ThinkBook Plus, here in its second-generation form – which Lenovo calls “Gen 2 i” for some reason – features an E Ink display on the exterior, while an LCD screen lives within (in more standard laptop design fare).

This second-gen device’s key shift over the original product is that the E Ink display now covers 68 per cent of the exterior, increasing it by over 48 per cent compared to the original.

So why dual screen? Just as we said of the original: “E Ink is a low refresh-rate monochrome display technology, just like you have in an Amazon Kindle. It’s designed to be super low-energy in use, to negate battery drain, without the backlight causing eye stress. For reading, therefore, it’s a very comfortable experience”.

Acer Chromebook Spin 514

In a first for Acer’s Chromebook line-up the 2021 Chromebook Spin 514 sports an AMD Ryzen processor and graphics. It’s part of the increasing shift away from Intel chipsets.

Key to the design is a hinge that means this Chromebook can be used as a laptop, pressed flat as a tablet, or spun around for ‘stand’ and ‘tent’ positions at any angle you please.

The years have shown Acer progress its product line, too, with this 2021 model sporting far smaller screen bezels to the edges of its 14-inch Full HD touchscreen display.

The 2021 version of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro now offers an OLED display as part of its spec – promising richer blacks and more saturated colours than its LCD counterpart.

That screen is a 14-inch panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the resolution can be specified up to 2.8K (that’s 2880 by 1800 pixels) across its 16:10 aspect ratio – which is wider and taller for more visible real-estate.

The screen is the one core difference in an otherwise similar feature set to the Slim 7i Pro’s LCD counterpart – both models including up to 11th Gen Intel Core processors with optional Nvidia GeForce MX450 discrete graphics.

The IdeaPad 5G is Lenovo’s third take on the connected ultra-fast laptop. The IdeaPad’s aim is to being in a new phase of affordability, the 14-inch model – which isn’t available in North America – starting at €799.00 in Europe.

Take that in context: the Yoga 5G launched with a staggering £3K price tag on contract in the UK – at a time of life when hardly anyone is out and about on the move.

The IdeaPad 5G follows a similar structure to earlier Yoga 5G: it’s built upon Qualcomm’s 8CX hardware, which means 5G connectivity, no fans needed for cooling (so it’s silent), and absurdly good battery life is a given.

But that hardware also means full-fat Windows apps aren’t necessarily supported.

The most noteworthy of HP’s new releases at this CES, the Elite Folio, is centred around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform with a fanless design and 5G connectivity.

That brings with it similar advances and drawbacks to the Lenovo IdeaPad 5G (featured above), i.e. great battery life but not full compatibility with the full suite of Windows apps – but if you want 5G and longevity for an on-the-go office-like laptop then it’s likely to be a cracker.

MSI updates its notebooks with the new Nvidia RTX 30 series GPUs

Following Nvidia’s announcement of the mobile RTX 30 series GPUs, notebook manufacturers are quick to announce refreshes of their laptops with the new hardware. MSI, being one of the key players in performance category wasted no time announcing a bunch of updates across its lineup. The CPUs are still Intel’s older 10th Generation, except for the Stealth 15, which will employ the new H35-series.

Let’s start with the MSI Raider GE76. A big 17.3-inch gaming laptop with a choihce between 3840 x 2160px 60Hz display or a 240Hz one at 1080p resolution. The CPU options go up to 10th Gen Core i9 paired with an RTX 3080 (16GB GDDR6). RAM is configurable up to 64GB of DDR4-3200 while the storage relies on two M.2 PCIe NVMe slots. A smaller, 15.6-inch version of the same, called Raider GE66, is also available.

There’s a special GE76 Dragon Edition version brings more premium looks and patterns and SteelSeries keyboard. It also comes with a 300Hz 1080p display.

Pricing starts at $2,199 for the 17-inch variant and $1,499 for the 15-inch one. Both launch in February.

The MSI Stealth GS66 is a 15-inch laptop with either a 1080p@300Hz display or 2160p@60Hz. CPUs go up to 10th Gen Core i9 aided by anything between RTX 3060 and RTX 3080 (16GB GDDR6). Storage and RAM are both the same as on the Raider-series.

But there’s also the MSI Stealth 15M, which is the only one, for now, that offers the new Core i7-11375H Special Edition Tiger Lake-H35 CPU. It’s a more portable version of the GS66 with 15-inch 1080p screen at 144Hz and up to 64GB of RAM. Only one M.2 SSD slot, though, but since this is Intel’s 11th Gen platform, the laptop also supports Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity.

The GS66’s price is yet unknown while the Stealth 15M will sell for $1,499 and will hit the stores in March.

The next in line are the MSI Leopard GP76 and GP66. The GP76 is a 17-incher and the GP66 is a 15.6-incherm, but the panels are 1080p@144Hz in either case. The available CPUs go up to Core i7 (again 10th Gen). You can select an RTX 3070 or RTX 3080. Dual M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots and up to 64GB RAM support are at hand as well.

The 15-inch model will ask $2,299 while the bigger iteration will start at $1,799. Sales begin in February.

Intel Enables Memory Overclocking On H570 and B560 Chipsets

With its 500-series chipsets, Intel has finally broken tradition and enabled memory overclocking on a non-Z chipset. For this generation, motherboards that leverage the H570 or B560 chipset will allow consumers to use memory that’s faster than the official supported specification for Rocket Lake-S.

Intel’s latest move may look insignificant for AMD owners, as AMD was always more accomodating with memory overclocking on its budget chipsets, such as the A-or B-series. Before the 500-series chipsets came along, Intel owners only had access to memory overclocking on the flagship Z-series chipset. It took Intel long enough, but it’s nice to finally see the chipmaker opening the door for the pocket-friendly chipsets.

For Comet Lake-S, Intel utilized a two-level scheme for memory support. The Core i9 and Core i7 SKUs natively support DDR4-2933, while the Core i5 and below tiers are limited to DDR4-2666. Therefore, H470 and B460 chipsets were restricted to DDR4-2933 support.

ASRock’s Z590 Taichi product page (via momomo_us) suggests that Intel is employing a similar tactic with Rocket Lake-S. The description for memory support reads “11th Gen Intel Core™ (i9/i7/i5) support DDR4 up to 3200; Core (i3), Pentium and Celeron support DDR4 up to 2666.”

An early rumor suggested that the 11th Generation branding housed both Rocket Lake-S and Comet Lake Refresh chips. ASRock’s lettering supports this theory. The Core i9 to Core i5 models are Rocket Lake-S chips that support DDR4-3200, and the remnants are Comet Lake Refresh chips that do DDR4-2666, the same as the existing generation.

The H570 and B560 chipsets now support memory overclocking (memory above DDR4-3200), but you still need to pair the respective motherboard with a Core i5 and above processor. Core i3 and below still stick to DDR4-2666. It’s not the full mile, but it’s something nonetheless. In the past, pairing a Core i9 chip on an H-or B-series chipset meant you were locked out from using faster memory.

ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 and 14: Hardware and secondary display improvements

CES 2021: The MSI GS66 Stealth combines RTX 3080 and Core i9-10980HK in less than 1.99 cm thin

MSI’s GS Stealth range was one of the pioneers in offering gaming laptops with thick content. Technology has advanced and more and more power can be put into laptops with more compact sizes and the new MSI GS 66 Stealth is a clear example.

It is a device with a thickness ranging from 18, 3mm up to 19, 8 mm and that hides inside a powerful Intel Core i9 – 10980 HK next to the newly released NVIDIA graphics, being able to choose between an RTX 3060 and an RTX 3070, even a model with the powerful RTX 3080.

WiFi 6E, 2,5GbE, Thunderbolt or USB 3.2 Gen 2 are some of the connectivity options of this GS 66 Stealth

This main hardware is accompanied by up to 64 3 GB of DDR4 memory. 200 MHz and up to two m.2 NVMe SSDs, along with a Killer E 3100 2.5GbE and connected d WiFi 6E with an Intel AX chip 210. It supports Thunderbolt 3.0 in one of its USB-C, in addition to having USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity, which was previously known as USB 3.1.

The keyboard, as usual in MSI gaming, is signed by SteelSeries with RGB lighting key by key.

The MSI GS 66 New generation Stealth is powered by a battery of 99, 9 Wh, the legal maximum allowed to be transported by plane (it must be less than 100 Wh), and together with dimensions of 383 x 300 x 30, 8 mm.
