youtube-has-paid-more-than-$30-billion-to-creators,-artists,-and-others-over-the-last-three-years

YouTube has paid more than $30 billion to creators, artists, and others over the last three years

YouTube has paid out more than $30 billion to creators, artists, and media organizations over the last three years, according to a new letter published by CEO Susan Wojcicki.

In Wojcicki’s first letter to creators of 2021, the CEO spent some time addressing YouTube’s growth. The number of new channels that joined the company’s Partner Program, which allows creators to earn advertising revenue, more than doubled in 2020. YouTube also “contributed approximately $16 billion to the U.S. GDP in 2019, supporting the equivalent of 345,000 full time jobs,” according to an Oxford Economics report that Wojcicki highlights.

The letter also focuses on the work YouTube’s team still has in front of them. Mainly, transparency, especially where content strikes and advertising dollars are concerned. Wojcicki noted that at the “scale we operate, it’s hard for creators to keep up with changing Community Guidelines.”

Wojcicki’s letter states that YouTube wants to be better about communicating changes to avoid channel strikes. After three strikes within a 90-day period, a channel is terminated.

“In December, I spoke with creator Charlie White from the channel penguinz0 after he tweeted about being given a strike for an older video due to a new policy,” Wojcicki wrote. “We know this situation is similar to frustrations shared by other creators.”

One example that came up after the 2020 presidential election was YouTube’s decision to ban any videos that propelled misinformation about voter fraud. The new policy went into effect in December, but YouTube gave a grace period for creators to ensure none of their videos violated the new policies.

YouTube executives have also faced mounting pressure to do a better job of moderating the site and preventing misinformation from spreading. YouTube is now shifting its focus to vaccination misinformation. “We’re always working to strike the right balance between openness and responsibility as we meet the guidelines set by governments around the world,” Wojcicki wrote.

One other interesting part of Wojcicki’s letter was a focus on regulation. A recent hot topic in tech policy circles is reform of Section 230, which effectively allows social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to operate without being liable for content people post. Wojcicki referred to Section 230 as an act that “enables us to both keep YouTube open and allow a large amount of content on the internet as well as take the actions necessary to protect our platform.” Although Wojcicki didn’t issue a stronger sentiment, she did bring up that the debate over Section 230 happening in Congress has caught the attention of creators like Hila and Ethan Klein.

Wojcicki’s full letter, which includes more details about creator revenue and an update on YouTube Shorts, the company’s answer to TikTok, can be read on Google’s blog.

go-read-this-story-about-how-r/wallstreetbets-triggered-a-huge-rise-in-gamestop’s-stock-price

Go read this story about how r/WallStreetBets triggered a huge rise in GameStop’s stock price

The market, like Soylent Green, is made of people. That’s never more clear than when there’s something bonkers happening — like what’s happened with video game retailer GameStop’s stock since last September. Back then, it was trading at around $6.68; by this morning, however, it was trading at $146.97. (Since that astounding high, it fell to $61.13 as of 12:26PM EST.) What happened?

For that, check out this wild story from Bloomberg, which reported exactly how the subreddit r/WallStreetBets grabbed hold of a huge opportunity — found, naturally, in the mass shorting of GameStop stock. As writer Brandon Kochkodin explains, the stage for the rise was set in 2019, when two important things happened. “One was Michael Burry — of Big Short fame and the veritable spirit animal for internet stock gurus hoping to hit the big time — saying he was long the shares through his fund Scion Asset Management,” writes Kochkodin. “Second was the surfacing of an idea, first in jest, that eventually evolved into the blueprint for the crowd-sourced short squeeze that has blown up in January. Could GameStop fall so far as to make a takeover possible — by WallStreetBets itself?”

The rest of the story involves ballsy moves from a cadre of retail investors with, as they say over on r/WallStreetBets, “diamond hands.” These Reddit users managed to move the needle — to change the stock price — with their distinct brand of semi-disciplined investing. The whole thing is worth a read, as Kochkodin deftly explains the market conditions that led to at least one person becoming a millionaire (at least on paper).

netflix-update-makes-your-android-phone’s-crappy-speakers-sound-better

Netflix update makes your Android phone’s crappy speakers sound better

Netflix has detailed an upgrade to its Android app which should reduce buffering and make audio sound better and easier to hear over background noise. It’s been made possible thanks to the adoption of the xHE-AAC codec, which a Netflix blog post says should “improve intelligibility in noisy environments, adapt to variable cellular connections, and scale to studio-quality.” Netflix’s use of the codec was announced earlier this month, and is available on devices running Android 9 and above.

xHE-AAC uses metadata to solve a few different audio problems people have when watching shows on mobile devices. Netflix explains this is often a problem of loud background noise making content hard to hear, combined with weak and tinny phone speakers that sound bad when you try to put up the volume. Inconsistent dialogue levels also mean you have to constantly turn your volume up and down between shows.

Netflix says xHE-AAC offers better Dynamic Range Control, a technology that reduces the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a show. Quiet content is made louder so you can hear it over background noise, and the volume of loud content is brought down to prevent clipping, all in theory without sacrificing audio quality. Netflix also says that the volume of dialogue is kept consistent between shows.

Finally, the codec also supports “seamless bitrate switching,” which means it should work better in environments with inconsistent internet speeds. Netflix added similar adaptive bitrate functionality to its TV apps back in 2019.

Netflix says that user testing has demonstrated the benefits of the codec. Volume changes between content are “noticeably down” and viewers switch away from using their phone’s built-in speakers 7 percent less often with the new codec. Netflix says it hopes to bring the codec to other platforms that support it. For those keeping track, iPhones have supported xHE-AAC since the release of iOS 13 in 2019.

What Philips Hue smart bulbs are there and which should you buy?

(Pocket-lint) – The Philips Hue smart lighting system has grown dramatically in the last few years, in both popularity and the number of available products, further cementing its place at the top of the smart lighting pile.

It’s now pretty safe to say that Philips’ range of connected LED lighting has an option to fit just about every socket you could possibly think of.

  • Best smart plugs: Google, Alexa and Apple HomeKit control

That’s why we’ve put together a quick, handy list of the current Philips Hue bulb line-up to give you an idea of how you can add colour and ambiance into your life.

Bear in mind that we haven’t included the other Hue products and controllers from Philips, just the bulbs themselves.

Pocket-lint

What is Philips Hue?

Philips Hue is a lighting system that works in conjunction with iOS and Android applications and smart home hubs in order to change colour or white levels depending on your mood. It can also be linked to other Internet of Things devices to switch on, off or change the lighting style through your home network.

It works in conjunction with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Nest, Samsung SmartThings and many other smart home devices. You do not need any of them to use Philips Hue lighting though – all new Philips bulbs now come with Bluetooth on board, meaning you can control them from your phone when in range.

There are multiple bulbs and lighting products in the range, and they come into their full potential when linked to your network through a Philips Hue Bridge – a small, connected hub that is wired to your router and controls the lights wirelessly. This is often found as part of a starter kit.

You can also control Hue bulbs directly with a Zigbee controller, such as the Amazon Echo Plus.

There are different styles of bulbs, most of which fit into two lighting categories: white and colour ambiance, which can display millions of colours, and white ambiance, which can be set to a wide selection of warm or cool white lighting options. Now there are also great filament options, too.

If you’re looking for outdoor lighting, there are some Philips Hue lights that work in your garden, but we’ve concentrated on indoor options here.

What Philips Hue bulbs are available?

There are bulbs in the range for all manner of fittings and styles, that offer white ambiance or white and colour ambiance. Here is the range that you can get at present.

Remember, you will need the Philips Bridge to exert full control over these bulbs, although Bluetooth control will still give you a good taste for what they’re capable of.

Philips claims all its bulbs will last up to 25,000 hours each – around eight-and-a-half years if you have the bulb switched on eight hours a day every day of the year.

Philips

Philips Hue white ambiance E14 Candle

squirrel_widget_172728

One of Philip’s newer Hue bulbs, this candle comes with an E14 screw fitting and has a 6W LED output that is equivalent to 40W. The candle form factor is otherwise known as B39.

It is capable of more than 50,000 shades of white, from warm to cool white.

Philips Hue white and colour ambiance E14 Candle

squirrel_widget_172729

Also with an E14 screw fitting and B39 form factor, the colour version of the Candle has an LED power output of 6.5W. It has the same lumen output though, of 470lm at 4000K.

It is also capable of more than 50,000 shades of white, but adds 16 million colours to the mix.

Philips

Philips Hue white extension bulb A19/E27

squirrel_widget_172881

The most commonly used bulb in many households, this A19/E27 screw fitting light has a power output of 9.5W and A60 form factor.

Its light output is 806lm and is smart but doesn’t change colour or white tone. That means it will stay the same colour temperature of 2,700K (warm white), but can be dimmed and switched on and off remotely.

Philips

Philips Hue white ambiance extension bulb A19/E27

squirrel_widget_172730

Similar to the above but with a flatter form factor, the white ambiance version with A19/E17 screw fitting has a 10W power output. Its brightness is up to 800 lumens at 4000K.

It is capable of more than 50,000 shades of white and is dimmable via Hue compatible devices down to one per cent.

Philips

Philips Hue white and colour ambiance extension bulb A19/E27

squirrel_widget_172731

The exact same form factor as the white ambiance version, this A19/E27 screw fitting bulb is capable of slightly brighter output, at up to 806 lumens at 4000K. It is a 10W LED bulb.

It has all shades of white plus 16 million colours. A newer version was released in recent times, with a richer colour palette.

If you have an older Hue system you might find some of the colours do not match the first generation bulbs.

Philips

Philips Hue white ambiance extension bulb B22

squirrel_widget_172732

Commonly known as a bayonet fitting, this white only bulb is the same as the A19/E7 version although it is slightly brighter, capable of up to 806 lumens at 4000K.

It can be set at more than 50,000 shades of white.

Philips

squirrel_widget_172733

Again, similar to the A19/E17 version of the colour bulb above, the B22 comes with the bayonet fitting instead. It only goes up to 600 lumens at 4000K in brightness however.

It offers all shades of white and 16 million colours.

It is also a “richer colour” bulb so might not match older models.

Philips

Philips Hue white ambiance extension bulb GU10

squirrel_widget_172854

Designed for spot lights the GU10 form factor has two locking pins and generally sits recessed into a ceiling or spot lamp. This bulb has 5.5W of maximum power output and a brightness of up to 300 lumens at 4000K.

It too offers more than 50,000 shades of white, from warm to cold colour temperatures. And it can be dimmed through Hue compatible devices down to one per cent.

Philips

Philips Hue white and colour ambiance extension bulb GU10

squirrel_widget_172734

The exact same form factor as the GU10 above, but with 6.5W of maximum output power. It has less brightness though, at up to 250 lumens at 4000K.

It adds 16 million colours to the numerous shades of white that can be achieved.

Philips Hue Lightstrips

Many people wanting to add a little colour lighting to their home will be looking at Lightstrips. This is a strip of LED lighting that works with the Hue system (so it’s also Alexa and Google Home compatible), but there are two different versions of Lightstrips, the original and Plus. Both are white and colour and both can be cut to length, but the Plus can also be extended, making it much more flexible, the original is less widely available, but be sure you’re buying the right version.

Philips

Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus

squirrel_widget_172735

The Hue Lightstrip is designed to add mood lighting to your room, with an adhesive back so it can be stuck under worktops or furniture, or behind your TV, to provide warm or cool white light and up to 16 million colours.

It comes at a length of 2m, but with Lightstrip Plus, you add extension cables, or extend the run of LED lights themselves, so it’s very flexible.

Philips Hue Filament Bulbs

One of Phililps’ latest additions to the Hue range is its new filament bulb offering. These bulbs have a beautiful retro feel to them, shining at what looks like a lower wattage to give you a bit of hipster chic.

They’re a great decorative option and really lend character to a room or environment.

If you need a different fitting, the filament bulbs can also be bought with B22 bayonet cap. Because of the filament design, though, don’t expect any colour control. You’re sacrificing that power by choosing this stylish sort of bulb.

What Philips Hue starter kits are available?

As we say above, you will need a Philips Hue Bridge to connected your Hue bulbs to a home network. These often come as part of a starter kit with two or three bulbs included.

Here are the starter kits we recommend if you don’t already have Philips Hue lighting in your home.

Philips

Philips Hue white starter kit A19/E27

squirrel_widget_130127

This comes with the Philips Bridge 2.0 and two 9.5W white bulbs with A19/E27 screw fittings as detailed above. They have a fixed white colour but it is the cheapest way to get into Philips Hue.

Philips

Philips Hue white ambiance starter kit A19/E27

squirrel_widget_172738

This contains the Philips Hue Bridge 2.0, two A19/E27 white ambiance bulbs capable of more than 50,000 shades of white and a wireless dimming switch.

Philips

Philips Hue white and colour ambiance starter kit A19/E27

squirrel_widget_172739

In this pack you get the Philips Hue Bridge 2.0 and three A19/E27 white and colour ambiance bulbs capable of 16 million colours. They are the richer colour variants.

Philips

Philips Hue white and colour ambiance starter kit B22

squirrel_widget_172740

Essentially exactly the same as the kit above, except you get three B22 bayonet fitting versions of the bulbs with the Philips Hue Bridge 2.0.

Philips

SpaceX launches record batch of satellites in first in-house rideshare mission

SpaceX launched a batch of 143 spacecraft to space from Florida on Sunday morning under the company’s new cost-cutting SmallSat Rideshare Program, breaking the record for the most satellites lofted into space on a single launch.

The Transporter-1 mission kicks off a potentially lucrative business line for SpaceX, which unveiled in 2019 its SmallSat Rideshare Program, essentially a carpool for dozens of satellites of different shapes and sizes. The program offers relatively cheap access to space for small satellite companies starting at $1 million for the first 485 pounds.

Much like a rideshare Uber, a company’s small satellite can hitch a ride to space with other spacecraft instead of buying an entire rocket at a much higher price.

After scrubbing an initial launch attempt on Saturday due to bad weather, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket lifted off 24 hours later from its Cape Canaveral Space Force Station launch pad at 10AM ET, sending a mix of shoebox-sized CubeSats and much heavier microsatellites to a 326-mile-high polar orbit — an unusual trajectory for a Florida launch site. SpaceX launched its first polar mission from Florida in August last year.

The launch, SpaceX’s third so far this year, marks the most satellites carried to space on a single rocket, a record previously held by an Indian satellite launch in 2017 carrying 104 satellites. The 143 spacecraft aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 include 48 Earth imaging satellites dubbed SuperDoves from Planet, 17 tiny communications satellites for Toronto-based Kepler, and 30 small satellites for the US and Europe packaged by Berlin, Germany-based Exolaunch.

Also aboard the flight are small capsules of human ashes arranged by Celestis, a spaceflight memorial company. Ten Starlink satellites are also hitching a ride, inching SpaceX toward the 1,000 mark for the number of active satellites in space supporting its broadband internet constellation.

DARPA, the Pentagon’s R&D agency, pulled out from the rideshare mission earlier this month after its two 187-pound satellites were damaged during launch processing in Cape Canaveral.

The Transporter-1 mission, coming just four days after SpaceX launched 60 of its Starlink satellites to space, keeps pace with what’s set to be a remarkably eventful year in orbit as SpaceX, OneWeb and other companies race to build vast constellations of internet-beaming satellites. In the past 16 days, SpaceX has launched more satellites to space than what the entire world launched in any year before 2013, according to data compiled by Jonathan McDowell, a Harvard astronomer and expert satellite tracker.

Rideshare missions on larger rockets appeal to a growing demand for affordable launch services from small satellite companies, ramping up competition with companies like Rocket Lab and Virgin Orbit with smaller rockets tailored for dedicated small satellite launches.

NETGEAR Orbi LBR20 4G LTE WiFi Router Review

Introduction

So here I am, having moved out of the US after spending what seems like an eternity in Taiwan before finally moving to my new home in Europe for the time being. As it turns out, things are different here! Broadband internet connectivity can vary from country to country, but generally is far superior to the USA in terms of options, pricing, and bandwidth caps. Yet there remain issues in fiber connectivity to a lot of places; options are still limited in speed and stability even for a wired connection. The other improvement is with mobile networks, and when I started looking at this further, I realized that I was for once in a situation where mobile broadband for the home was a viable consideration. NETGEAR clearly thought the same with a portfolio of such products available for the consumer. Today, we take a look at another of their Orbi WiFi routers, but this time it is not a WiFi system and allows for 4G LTE connectivity as well.

An Orbi router by itself rather than a system of router and satellite units seems almost blasphemous, but there is good reason for it. The NETGEAR Orbi LBR20 is their current flagship performance router for mobile broadband connectivity, with no 5G option at this time. The other options from the company are mobile hot spots, of which we will look at one separately in detail soon, and a standalone WiFi 6 LTE Nighthawk router that has lower throughput compared to this. The LBR20 does retain the option to pair with satellite units (purchased separately) for further coverage expansion as needed, but this review covers the individual unit, beginning with a look at the specifications in the table below.

ibm:-loss-of-profit-causes-share-price-to-fall

IBM: Loss of profit causes share price to fall

IBM suffered a surprisingly significant loss of business at the end of the year. In the final quarter, sales fell year-on-year by a good six percent to 20, 4 billion US dollars, about 16, 8 billion euros, as IBM announced on Thursday after the US market closed. Net income fell 42 percent to $ 1.3 billion due to high corporate restructuring costs.

The numbers were not well received by investors, the share initially fell by more than seven percent after the trading hours. In terms of profit, IBM exceeded market expectations, but significantly higher sales were expected on Wall Street. In the past twelve months the share price has fallen by 16 percent.

Less growth in the cloud business IBM’s lucrative cloud business with IT services and storage space on the Internet recently grew significantly more slowly than in the previous quarter, as can be seen in the IBM annual report. The sales increased here compared to the same period last year by ten percent to 7.5 billion dollars. Because of the weaknesses in the traditional core hardware business, for example with servers and mainframes, overall group-wide sales have been on the downside for a long time anyway.

In the past financial year, sales rose by five percent to 73, $ 6 billion back. Profits dropped 42 percent to $ 5.5 billion. IBM wants to split off its IT infrastructure business and go public on its own. In future, the focus will be on cloud services and business areas such as data analysis and artificial intelligence, which should bring more growth.

Falling share price IBM has not been able to position itself with a stronger growth in recent years, which investors no longer want to accept. In addition, IBM is preparing to split into two publicly traded companies. In the infrastructure division, which is currently being separated, there are job cuts in Europe. Round 10. 000 Jobs should be dropped, in Germany the United Service Union Verdi speaks of around 1000 jobs. Job cuts in order to compensate for general weaknesses are not well received by investors.

This now has a full impact on the company’s share price. Since Thursday evening, the price of an IBM security has only known one direction: down. Over the course of Friday morning, a share lost around 7, 20 percent. On Thursday, an IBM share was still quoted at 107, 90 euros. Now their value is 100, 05 Euro like. wtf:-scheuer-has-the-internet-connection-relocated

WTF: Scheuer has the Internet connection relocated

You know: on some days your internet connection crumbles, at some point it is completely dead. You call your provider, shimmy through questions from a machine porter and put yourself on hold. There is another way: you can be called by the responsible minister in person. However, you might have to wait years.

The internet is full of hot IT news and stale pr0n. In between there are always pearls that are too good for / dev / null.

This can now be seen in the case of a 17 – year-old student from the Bavarian town of Vierkirchen. Like so many young people, she is currently schooling at home, but has poor internet there. She gave a lecture on video conferencing, thickly wrapped in a hat, scarf and gloves in the snow-covered garden in front of the house, because the reception is more or less there. Scheuer, Federal Minister for Digital Infrastructure, found out about this and called Vierkirchen. The student is quoted in various media reports as quoted in various media reports.

Wave of excitement. A few minutes after the phone call, the Internet provider got in touch and promised to move the connection by Monday at the latest The pupil’s father reported: “We hardly have internet, not even with the cell phone.” The problems had existed for years, technicians kept coming by, but nothing had changed.

So far, so good . There are at least two catches to the story: Scheuer didn’t just find out about the problem of the 17 – year-olds, her father had apparently at least made wind through Facebook . Today a wave of excitement can build up quickly in the social networks, which not even a minister can withstand.

These waves can rush up as high as a tower, but also quickly die away again. Perhaps on Monday there will be no more crows and no one is interested in whether the Internet provider has actually moved the connection by then. In any case, the wave of excitation will not have spilled over into the white spots of the broadband landscape, where Scheuer or his Ministry for Digital Infrastructure have not yet intervened personally to improve coverage. possible-violation-of-specification:-uhd-blu-rays-should-have-regional-codes

Possible violation of specification: UHD Blu-rays should have regional codes

One of the great advances brought about by the introduction of the Ultra HD Blu-ray was, in addition to the higher resolution and the expanded contrast range, that these discs no longer have a so-called regional code.

As a reminder: For video DVD and Blu-ray Disc, it was specified at the time that discs could only be played in the distribution zone provided by the respective rights holder. With DVD, the world was divided into eight regions (1-8), with Blu-ray Disc into three (A, B and C). The discs were only played if the disc and player had the same regional code.

This was to prevent users from other regions from importing and viewing discs with films, which may not even have been shown in the cinema in their country. This technology for digital rights management (it is not a copy protection) was never really effective, but was bypassed again and again by users in practice.

Back to the regional code with a trick Against the background of the omission of the regional code, it is understandable that some Americans who imported the UHD Blu-rays “Death Wish” and “Greenland” from Sweden, in internet forums express their amazement that their players refuse to play them with reference to the wrong region code.

In the meantime, the riddle seems to have been solved: The Swedish distributor SF Studios is said to have discovered that on the software side the Playback of an Ultra HD Blu-ray check the Blu-ray region code of the player. Background: Every UHD Blu-ray player can also play Blu-ray discs and has a Blu-ray region code for this (in order to meet their specifications). If the software developed by SF Studios determines that the UHD player does not return the region code “B” (for Europe), it blocks playback.

If this were to be the case, SF Studios would clearly bypassing the specifications of the Ultra HD Blu-ray – which then raises the question of how the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), as the master of the format, reacts to this. It is also conceivable, however, that SF Studio accidentally reused code for UHD BD authoring that was written for Blu-ray authoring. c’t has asked the studio and the BDA in this regard, answers are currently pending. beeper:-15-messaging-apps-in-one-service!-it's-the-bet-of-the-former-ceo-of-pebble-(at-$-10-a-month)

Beeper: 15 messaging apps in one service! It's the bet of the former CEO of Pebble (at $ 10 a month)

One service with 15 messaging applications. It is not a dream but the new platform of the former CEO of Pebble. It’s called Feeber and gathers all messaging services (even iMessage) in one place. The price? 10 $ per month.

by Bruno Mucciarelli published , at 10: 41 in the web channel

Whatsapp Telegram Facebook Slack Skype Instagram

Eric Migicovsky, is the former CEO and founder of Pebble, the company born a few decades ago and which gave birth to successful smartwatches with e-Paper display. The developer announced on Twitter the launch of Beeper or its new “ jewel ”: a universal messaging app that allows you to merge up to 15 different services , including iMessage, thanks to the open source protocol Matrix and not only. A solution that many are looking for to simplify the use of messages and that Beeper seems to do well even if paying well 10 $ per month.

Beeper: how the system works ” unifier ”?

Beeper meanwhile it is not a real news if not its name. In this case, in fact, before today, the platform was called NovaChat . From today, however, it is available as a Beeper and can be downloaded on request for both Windows and for macOS, Linux, iOS and Android . As mentioned, however, at least at the moment, one needs to fill out a form to receive an invitation, as it is still an almost Beta phase of the system.

But Beeper’s potential looks interesting. From the official website it is possible to observe how the application is capable of supporting up to 15 messaging systems such as: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Android Messages ( SMS), Telegram, Twitter, Slack, Hangouts, Instagram, Skype, IRC, Matrix, Discord, Signal and Beeper network. Yes, that iMessage is also among the services that can be replicated on Beeper, and this is perhaps the most striking novelty of the new service because so far no one had ever made such a thing possible since iMessage is a proprietary service of Apple but above all because it works only and exclusively on the ecosystem Apple.

How does it work? There is a little trick devised by the former CEO of Pebble. Migicovsky in fact allows iMessage to work also on Windows, Linux and Android if the user has a Mac that is always connected to the Internet so that it can function as a bridge. Alternatively, the software house already has recycled “jailbroken” iPhones ready , on which the Beeper app is installed, which it will send to users and which will allow access to the service. In all this Beeper costs 10 dollars per month although it is not clear if an iPhone is also included in the price.

Finally, you should know that all the various bridges needed to unify the various messaging services through the Matrix network are distributed for free on GitHub. This way the developers can host the backend on their servers. But be careful because the Beeper app is not open source, but it is possible to use Element, the Matrix open source client.
