5G reaches MásMóvil customers in 19 Spanish cities

MásMóvil, the telephone and Internet company that owns PepePhone or Yoigo among others , has announced the launch of its own 5G network for its mobile phone customers. Curiously, Yoigo already had 5G available since September.

The initial 5G coverage of MásMóvil reaches 19 cities of the Spanish territory and will combine its own infrastructure with that of Orange, a company they have reached to an agreement to use their networks. Remember that Orange has already had 5G available for a few months.

Facebook hits back at Apple with second critical newspaper ad

Facebook is stepping up its campaign against Apple’s privacy changes with a second full-page newspaper ad today. This new ad claims Apple’s iOS 14 privacy changes “will change the internet as we know it,” and force websites and blogs “to start charging you subscription fees” or add in-app purchases due to a lack of personalized ads. It follows a similar full-page newspaper ad in the The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the Washington Post yesterday.

Apple is planning to make changes to iOS 14 early next year that will require developers to ask for permission to gather data and track users across mobile apps and websites on an iPhone or iPad. Apple revealed how iOS 14 users will be prompted to opt into tracking in apps this week, noting that developers like Facebook can explain to users why they should allow tracking within the prompt.

These changes will impact Facebook’s lucrative ad business, but the social networking giant is framing them as something far larger that could impact small businesses. Unsurprisingly, Apple doesn’t agree. “We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users,” said an Apple spokesperson in response to Facebook’s first full-page newspaper ad yesterday. “Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not.”

Facebook clearly isn’t holding back on its PR campaign, with this latest newspaper ad trying to sway readers that Apple’s changes are more about moving websites and apps into a paid model where Apple stands to benefit from in-app purchases and subscriptions. With full-page ads in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and the Washington Post, Facebook is also very clearly trying to convince regulators (i.e. people that still read paper newspapers) to look at Apple’s privacy changes.

This is just the latest in an ongoing public spat between Apple and Facebook over iOS 14 privacy and policy changes, and follows Apple’s new App Store privacy labels. Facebook also hit out against Apple’s App Store policies earlier this year, adding to the growing industry pressure against Apple’s cloud gaming restrictions. Facebook also welcomed the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA) this week, hoping that the DMA “will also set boundaries for Apple.”

Tails 4.14: Security fixes and Linux kernel update for the anonymizing OS

The anonymizing live system Tails is now available in version 4. 14. The Linux kernel has been upgraded to 5.9, the Debian “Buster” base to 10. 7.

How to perform a manual upgrade is explained in a post on the Tails website. Tails developers provide instructions for reinstallation for Linux, macOS and Windows. Caution: According to the release notes, existing persistent storage (and thus also the data stored there) will be lost if you perform a new installation instead of an upgrade.

Home office security risk

Apple defends upcoming privacy changes as ‘standing up for our users’

Apple has responded to Facebook’s critiques of its upcoming privacy changes by saying that is “standing up for our users,” in a statement shared with The Verge. Facebook has been criticizing the company ahead of a future iOS update that will require users to give their permission for apps to collect data about them. Facebook took out full-page newspaper ads today attacking Apple, claiming that the changes will “limit businesses’ ability to run personalized ads and reach their customers effectively.”

Here is Apple’s full statement:

We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice.

Apple’s statement comes as Facebook reportedly plans to run another anti-Apple ad on Friday, according to BuzzFeed News editor John Paczkowski. This new ad will reportedly claim that Apple’s software update will “change the internet as we know it for the worse” because places like blogs and cooking sites will have to charge for subscriptions or in-app purchases instead of running personalized ads that would allow them to offer content for free.

Apps won’t be required to ask for users’ permission until sometime early next year. The change has already been delayed once — it was originally supposed to kick in with the release of iOS 14 this fall.

The spat between the two companies comes on the heels of Apple adding new App Store privacy labels that spell out how iOS apps use your data.

Texas attorney general announces ad tech antitrust probe against Google

Texas’ state attorney general has announced new antitrust charges against Google, focusing on the company’s ad tech.

In a bizarre video posted to the office’s verified Twitter account, Texas AG Ken Paxton says the company “repeatedly used its monopolistic power to control pricing” in online ads. “These actions harm every person in America,” Paxton continues. “It isn’t fair that Google can harm the web pages you visit and read.”

In the video, Paxton describes the action as a “multi-state lawsuit,” but it is unclear which other states have joined the lawsuit. A number of collaborating states left the lawsuit after several members of Paxton’s staff accused him of accepting bribes, triggering a broader crisis within the state office. More recently, Paxton’s office has hired private law firms specifically to work on the Google case.

Since the complaint has not appeared in official filings, it is also unclear what specific charges Google will face. Paxton’s office did not respond to a request for clarification. The office’s preliminary probe largely examined Google’s dominance of the online ad marketplace, particularly its recent ad tech acquisitions, so it is expected that the case will follow suit.

Reached for comment, Google denied the claim that digital ad markets are suffering from consolidation, citing recent declines in prices and fees. “Attorney General Paxton’s ad tech claims are meritless, yet he’s gone ahead in spite of all the facts,” a company representative said. “Digital ad prices have fallen over the last decade. Ad tech fees are falling too. Google’s ad tech fees are lower than the industry average. These are the hallmarks of a highly competitive industry.

Today’s case joins a number of parallel antitrust cases being brought against the tech giant. In October, the Department of Justice filed antitrust charges focusing specifically on Google’s contracts with companies like Apple and Mozilla to maintain its dominance in search. Texas has also joined that case as a co-plaintiff.

A third case led by Colorado’s state attorney general is also rumored to be close to filing. The Colorado case would focus on how Google’s search engine design has disadvantaged rivals like Yelp and Genius that also offer competing information services. A recent Politico report said a complaint could be filed “as soon as Thursday,” citing two people close to the probe.

Amazon’s Project Kuiper reveals design of antennas customers will use for internet-from-space constellation

Today, Amazon revealed the design of the antennas its customers will use to tap into the company’s upcoming massive satellite constellation, Project Kuiper, designed to provide broadband internet coverage from space.

The antenna, which is a phased-array design, underwent development and testing this fall, according to the company. With a diameter of just 12 inches across, the antenna is “smaller and lighter than legacy antenna designs,” Amazon claims. Testing showed the antenna can provide “maximum throughput of up to 400 Mbps.” The company also notes that the antenna can be used to stream 4K-quality videos from geostationary satellites, spacecraft that are located about 22,000 miles above the Earth.

Amazon Kuiper’s satellites will be much closer to Earth, though. In July, Amazon received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to launch a constellation of 3,236 satellites for Project Kuiper, with the spacecraft flying at altitudes ranging from 590 kilometers, or 366 miles, to 630 kilometers, or 391 miles. With so many satellites orbiting close to Earth, Project Kuiper aims to beam low-latency, broadband internet coverage to individual users on the planet below. The goal is to provide coverage to remote areas and regions that do not have access to traditional high-speed internet.

Amazon is one of a number of companies focused on launching a massive internet-from-space constellation. Notably, SpaceX is eyeing the same goal with its Starlink initiative, a proposed constellation of nearly 12,000 satellites that will also provide broadband internet from low to medium Earth orbits. SpaceX has already launched nearly 1,000 of its Starlink satellites and has even begun initial beta testing, providing select customers with at-home antennas to tap into the satellites and receive internet coverage. Amazon has yet to launch any satellites, nor has the company revealed on which rocket the satellites will launch.

Amazon argues that by making its user terminals smaller, it will reduce the cost of making the hardware as well as lower the price point for customers to opt into the program. The company claims it was able to go small by overlaying “tiny antenna element structures” over one another.

“If you want to make a difference for unserved and underserved communities, you need to deliver service at a price that makes sense for customers,” Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper, said in an Amazon blog post today. “This simple fact inspired one of our key tenets for Kuiper: to invent a light, compact phased array antenna that would allow us to produce an affordable customer terminal. It’s incredible to see such a small form factor delivering this type of speed and performance.”

The 12-inch diameter makes the Amazon antenna much smaller than the Starlink antenna based on photos of the SpaceX user terminals that beta-testers have posted to Reddit. To test out SpaceX’s Starlink hardware, beta-testers had to pay an upfront cost of $499 for all of the equipment and then an additional $99 a month. Amazon has not revealed its prices for Project Kuiper, but the company did vow to invest $10 billion into the program.

A month with the Huawei Mate 40 Pro

Introduction

Over the past few years, Huawei has always impressed with its flagship smartphones, which have all had a very good balance of specs, raw performance, subjective smoothness, and amazing cameras. However, since mid-2019, the Chinese company has been hobbled by the US Government’s various sanctions and bans, which have resulted in Huawei losing access to Google services and apps. This means it has had to go at it alone on the software front, and it all started with last year’s Mate 30 series.

We’ve taken a look at what it was like to live with the Google-free Mate 30 Pro in 2019, and then we touched upon the improvements we saw in this regard in our P40 Pro long-term review earlier this year.

Now that 2020 is almost ready to come to a close, we were wondering what (if anything) has changed over the past few months, and just how easy it is to get along with Huawei’s Mobile Services instead of Google’s, on an Android flagship smartphone.

We were lucky enough to have a Mate 40 Pro around, and thus decided to see what it’s all about. This is not one of our normal reviews that focus on objectively measuring every aspect of the phone’s performance.

We’ll let you know what it’s like to live with the Mate 40 Pro day in and day out, where it amazed us and where it disappointed, but we’ll also focus a lot on the app situation and how you can get around that without resorting to installing Google Mobile Services from shady sources across the Internet. Sure, you theoretically also have that option if you buy a new Huawei smartphone, but we can’t condone or recommend it, because random weird unheard of Chinese apps are still required, and who can tell how safe it is to put your digital life in their hands? Additionally, last we checked, notifications still won’t work for Google apps, which for most people would render them quite useless.

So this is an experiment meant to let you know how things stand in late 2020 when it comes to using either Google apps or alternatives, on a top of the line Huawei device. But it’s also going to give you a more subjective picture of what the phone is actually like outside of lab testing and the likes. Ubisoft+ library now available through Google Stadia

While EA Play won’t be coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC this year, things are going a bit better for Ubisoft and its partnership with Google Stadia. Back when Stadia was announced, Ubisoft said it had plans to bring uPlay+ (now known as Ubisoft+) to the cloud platform and now, the rollout has officially begun.

Ubisoft announced this week that Ubisoft+ is now officially supporting Google Stadia, meaning Ubisoft+ subscribers can use Stadia to stream the publisher’s biggest games without outright buying them and without the need for their own powerful gaming PC at home. Of course – you do need a powerful internet connection.

The rollout will take a little while, with US customers only having access to Ubisoft+ on Stadia at the moment. The service will be available to more Stadia users across the world in the coming days.

You don’t need to pay extra for Ubisoft+ on Stadia, although if you don’t subscribe to Stadia Pro, then you are limited to 1080p streaming. Meanwhile, a Stadia Pro subscription will net you access to 4K streaming with surround sound.

KitGuru Says: The Ubisoft+ library is no slouch, containing brand new releases like Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, in addition to the publisher’s back catalogue. TKG amendment: “Too little light and too much shadow”

As expected, the Cabinet initiated the amendment to the Telecommunications Act (TKG) on Wednesday morning. FreeRTOS LTS: Amazon's operating system for the Internet of Things

AWS has announced a LTS (Long Term Support) version of its open source real-time operating system FreeRTOS for microcontrollers. FreeRTOS is mainly used in small edge devices with low power consumption. The LTS versions should remain functionally stable for two years and only receive security patches and critical error corrections.

Only recommended updates to the FreeRTOS kernel and some libraries should be included in the updates. Changes to public APIs, file structures or creation processes that could affect the applications are left out. This should eliminate the risk of updates damaging an existing application.

Revised and checked The first version of FreeRTOS LTS is FreeRTOS 202012. 00 LTS. In addition to the FreeRTOS kernel, Long Term Support includes a number of FreeRTOS libraries that are required for embedded and IoT applications as well as for the secure connection of microcontroller devices to the cloud. These include FreeRTOS + TCP, coreMQTT, coreHTTP, corePKCS 11, coreJSON and AWS IoT Device Shadow.

These libraries stay at least until 31. December 2022 currently. They do not depend on any other libraries than the standard C library. Each LTS library has its own GitHub repository. This should make it easier for developers to integrate and update libraries in their FreeRTOS projects.

In addition, the LTS libraries were validated with the tool for automated test CBMC (C Bounded Model Checker) for memory security, to reduce vulnerability to a buffer overflow. In addition, AWS checked the LTS libraries for MISRA-C compliance and subjected them to additional code quality checks, including a static coverity analysis. In the download area of the FreeRTOS LTS libraries there is a corresponding LTS code quality checklist.

Federal government: BSI should be allowed to hack with IT Security Act 2.0

The Federal Government has initiated an amendment to the IT Security Act. She wants to upgrade the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) to a cyber authority with hacker powers. With 799 new posts, the office is to become a key player in the fight against botnets, neglected devices in the Internet of Things and the spread of malware.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) cut down the requirements for this in its most recent draft, for example the requirement that the log data may only be used to ward off dangers emanating from a malware found.
