Top 10 trending phones of week 52

As we see off the last full week of 2020 we get the Apple flagship on top of our trending chart. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has been there before, but it’s been months since it last managed this feat.

The upcoming Galaxy S21 Ultra has replaced the S21+ in the top 10 and has even managed to make the podium, while the most popular phone of the year – the Galaxy A51 rounds up the top three.

The Redmi Note 9 pair of China-bound Pro 5G and international Pro follow, with their Poco X3 NFC cousin in sixth.

Then there’s another Xiaomi-made phone in the Mi 10T Pro and one more Poco – the M3.

Finally we have the Galaxy A series duo of A21s and A71 at the foot of the chart.

Top 20 most popular phones in 2020

It is time to reflect on the smartphone scene as we’re sending off quite an unusual and remarkable year behind us. A lot of things happened and many of us were locked within the confinements of our own homes, having nothing but a smart device to connect to the outside world.

Thankfully, the smartphone companies kept delivering and they launched some incredible products in the past twelve months.

We gathered a list of the top 20 most popular phones and half of those were manufactured by Samsung – no surprise there from the world’s biggest smartphone maker. Apple, OnePlus, and Xiaomi also contributed with flagships and midrangers.

Some takeouts from this list are the reborn iPhone SE that got to the sixth most popular phone of 2020, although the iPhone 12 Pro Max flagship got up to fifth, having been around for just over two months. Another beloved company, OnePlus, also delivered a midranger that gathered a lot of interest – the Nord.

While the phone wasn’t exactly the flagship killer we expected to see, it does have a smooth screen, excellent battery life, and all the bells and whistles you might want from a €400 smartphone.

While the smartphone world seems oversaturated, we actually have only five manufacturers in the whole Top 20 list, with four of them bringing multiple devices. We are missing phones from Huawei, Oppo, vivo although that’s not for lack of attention to the brands themselves – they just release so many phones, diluting the interest somewhat.

We are also see no LG, Nokia, Motorola, and Sony phones in the Top 20 spots, reflecting on the brands’ diminished sales – hopefully they’ll bounce back in 2021.

Without further ado here’s the full list of the Top 20 most popular phones in 2020:

My top 5 phones of 2020 – Victor

Being knee-deep in the mobile industry on a daily basis is undoubtedly a dream job for me. For it lets me experience the latest and greatest tech. However, while far from complaining, there are certain aspects of my job I find a bit annoying. For a few years we’ve seen an avalanche of nearly-identical, bland handsets flooding the market, with an impossibly short turnover. I frankly hate that this is the state that a big chunk of the glorious smartphone industry is in. So, in order for a phone to make my personal top list it needs a purpose and clear goal – in other words a reason for existing.

Apple iPhone SE (2020)

In no particular order then, I kick things off with the iPhone SE (2020). Full disclosure, I am not an iPhone person, however, the sensibility of the SE is far from wasted on me. First off, there is the compact smartphone angle to consider. Many users seem to miss truly small formfactor devices and these are indeed getting rarer. However, by that logic, I would have gone with the iPhone 12 mini instead for my personal list, for it’s even more compact body, newer hardware and better space utilization overall.

My reasoning to like the SE 2020 is largely centered around the simple fact that it’s what users want and what most of them ultimately need. Apple’s products continue to have one of the longest upgrade cycles in the tech space. A huge portion of iPhone users hold on to older models because they remain perfectly usable for their needs. Apple’s above average long-term hardware support deserves a lot of praise on that end. But so does Cupertino’s decision to finally start offering more sensible value offers. No wonder the iPhone SE (2020) has been selling like hotcakes.

Samsung Galaxy S20

The Samsung Galaxy S20 family is my next personal highlight of the year. I am particularly partial to the vanilla S20, in use by my significant other. Samsung straight up outdid itself in terms of feature parity and gradual segmentation within the mainstream S20 flagship line. Even the smallest and cheapest of the trio gets to enjoy the excellent 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and a versatile main camera setup. I just really wish that the same of feature parity got applied to the Note20 family as well. In fact, I ended-up being so disappointed on that end that I skipped yet another Note generation for my personal phone, still sticking to the trusty-old Galaxy Note9.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2

While still on the topic of Samsung and personal device upgrade conundrums, I did spend quite a bit of time with the Galaxy Z Fold2 this year. In fact, I have been going back and forth on the actual purchase of one on quite a few occasions. As far as futuristic folding display form-factors go, Samsung’s take is by far the most functional you can get now. Even with all of the now well-documented drawbacks to the design and ongoing software imperfections related to the form-factor, I know for a fact that the overall experience and its benefits outweigh any shortcoming by a big margin in my book.

As for reasons why I haven’t been able to commit, not yet at least, there are personal paranoid longevity fears of mine, mostly related to the soft display surface, combined with my tendency to stick to phones for a couple of years or so. Plus, fears of missing out on the S Pen are ever-present and have been growing with recent developments regarding S Pen support on the Galaxy S21 line. Depending on how all of these play out in the next few months, I can definitely see myself embracing a 2021 Samsung foldable. Mark me down as a firm believer in a foldable future.

Asus ROG Phone 3

Another on and off fling of mine in 2020 has been the Asus ROG Phone 3. That actually sounds like an understatement, though, as I have been thoroughly in love with the ROG line, ever since the original shaped the current growing gaming smartphone niche.

But even with competition in the space sprawling, the ROG Phone 3 continues to hold the top-dog gaming king position. Both on an objective and my own personal scale. Nobody has realistically come close to the incredible depth of customization, performance tuning, fluidity of the experience and stunning accessory ecosystem of the ROG Phone 3.

But, more importantly in my book, the ROG Phone 3 manages to deliver an amazing flagship experience beyond its gaming prowess. So much so as to draw me in – a power-user with almost non-existent mobile gaming needs. That speaks to the well-rounded nature of the ROG Phone 3 as a whole.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra

My final entry goes out to camera advancements in 2020, of which there have been a few. Originally, I felt like going with the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 for its versatile camera setup, kind of pioneering both the huge 108MP main camera sensor and the inclusion of dual telephoto shooters. Since that phone technically does not make the 2020 cut, though and also has some notable shortcoming in video capture, I am going with the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra instead.

Arguably, the best overall smartphone camera experience on the market to date. Of course, that is open for debate, but an opinion is an opinion and I’m sticking with mine.

2020 Winners and Losers: Apple

It’s been a difficult year for everyone, and even the giant that is Apple faced some atypical disruptions. It needed to sort a lot of supply and manufacturing hurdles in order to unload its considerable fleet of devices this year. It even needed to push the announcement of its golden goose – the iPhone line by as much as two months due to the pandemic.

But still 2020 has been a slam dunk year for Apple. Using the strong momentum of sales of its iPhone 11 and XR series in 2019, Apple started the year off a bit later than it perhaps indented, but with a bang.

Winner: Apple iPhone SE (2020)

The iPhone SE (2020) came in April and it proved a winning move for Apple. It put to use a lot of iPhone 8 parts laying around, bumped the camera to the 12MP from the iPhone XR, snatched the A13 Bionic chip from the iPhone 11 and finished things off with a sub-$400 price.

Since its announcement, the iPhone SE (2020) has sold in droves, only behind the iPhone 11.

Winner: Apple iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 is a superb follow-up to the iPhone 11, which is Apple’s strongest selling phone since its launch in September 2019. Apple added a high-res OLED display, a new slimmed-down design with the smaller bezels and flat sides, a brighter main camera, new colors, and most importantly, a similar price tag ($100 more at launch, which is more than reasonable for the added upgrades).

Loser: Apple iPhone 12 Pro

However in making the iPhone 12 such a great phone, Apple made the iPhone 12 Pro rather poor value for money. It adds 2GB of RAM (for a total of 6GB), a 2x telephoto camera that’s nothing if not run of the mill, a nicer build and higher base storage, but which ultimately costs $200/€200 more than the iPhone 12. It’s better to save your money and just get the iPhone 12.

Winner: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is Apple’s best, most expensive phone, and has reportedly been selling well, which makes it a win for the company. It has the biggest camera sensor on an iPhone with a very rare (for the smartphone world) sensor-shift stabilization, a longer zoom camera and the biggest display. It’s the biggest and best iPhone around – win!

Loser: Apple MagSafe

Apple embedded tiny magnets onto the backs of the iPhone 12 series, which enable attachable accessories like a wallet case or a wireless charger. MagSafe accessories are still in their infancy, but early reports suggest that Apple’s wallet attachment can easily fall off the phone – not great for a $60/€63 accessory. And don’t get us started on the $130/€145 leather sleeve or the basic clear case that retails for $49/€54.

Winner: Apple Watch SE

Seeing how affordable versions of a product sell great, Apple made an Apple Watch SE with most of the features of the Watch Series 6, but at an easier to swallow $280/€292 (40mm), $309/€321 price tag.

Winner: Apple iPhone 12 mini

Apple made the best compact phone of 2020. The iPhone 12 mini is truly mini. Compared to the Xperia 5 II, or the Google Pixel 5, the 12 mini is considerably shorter (13.2mm), narrower (3.8mm), thinner (0.6mm) and lighter (16g), while retaining the heavyweight features – A14 chipset, OLED display, Face ID, two flagship cameras, water resistance, wireless charging, stereo speakers, etc.

And it’s the cheapest iPhone 12 series device, which more than ensures that it will sell well. But given that it’s the only truly small powerful phone, it may sway a number of Android users to migrate.

Loser: Apple AirPods Max

Apple finally launched its over-ear AirPods and by all early accounts, the AirPods Max deliver powerful high-quality sound and are adept at cancelling noise. But they cost $550/€600. You could literally get both the Sony 1000-XM4 ($300/€380) and Bose 700 ($300/€250) for about the same amount of money – bonkers!

The AirPods Max don’t fold, are much heavier and come in an unpractical and ugly case.

Winner: Apple M1

Finally, Apple Silicon. Apple’s One More Thing for 2020 was the first ARM-based laptop and desktop chip, the Apple M1 and it is a definite win. The M1, which is essentially a more powerful version of the A14 Bionic inside the iPad Air and iPhone 12, brought productivity improvements over the Intel chips inside the MacBook Pro 13, Air and the Mac mini.

Thanks to the tight-nit optimizations Apple has baked into OS X Big Sur and the sheer abilities of the ARM-based M1 chip, the MacBook Pro 13 and MacBook Air are able to perform well at video and photo editing and coding to a level formerly reserved for the MacBook Pro 16.

Xiaomi will not include a charger in its mobiles after laughing at Apple for removing it from the iPhone 12

We already know some details of the Xiaomi Mi 11, a terminal that has not yet has been presented, although its arrival is expected today along with a powerful Snapdragon 888, Qualcomm’s most powerful SoC, 108 MP camera and different colors.

Now, its CEO has announced through the Chinese portal Weibo that the Xiaomi Mi 11 will not have a charger included in the box . The excuse they give is the protection of the environment, a reason that the company did not seem to take into account just two months ago when they criticized the same move that Apple had made.

After criticizing it, Xiaomi and Samsung have followed Apple’s strategy by eliminating the charger from their terminals

Apple was one of the first companies to dispense with the charger in their iPhone 12, a highly criticized move and that companies such as Xiaomi and Samsung themselves took advantage of their marketing campaigns by making fun of the strategy of the apple company . Now, life turns, both Samsung and Xiaomi have had to eat their words after announcing that their terminals will stop carrying a charger, in fact, Samsung has rushed to delete all the messages they had launched about the absence of a charger from the iPhone.

For the moment, Xiaomi maintains its messages ironically criticizing the absence charger on their mobiles, despite the fact that now, they are one of the few companies that will sell their high-end terminals without a charger.
